Sourcing marine switchboards from China

Marine electrical switchboards from China normally pay 2% UK duty; separate touch-input panels without displays pay 0%. Confirm the vessel's applicable requirements and the electrical safety rules' scope before ordering. Maintenance access must be considered in the design. Cambridge China Bridge sources marine electrical switchboards.

Duty on marine electrical switchboards

Heading 8537 covers assembled electrical control and distribution boards equipped with switching or protecting apparatus. A marine distribution board up to 1,000 V will commonly fall under 8537 10 98 99. Separately imported programmable controllers and touch-input components have their own lines. See the wider heading guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected switchboard and controller lines carried 2% duty from China; the separate touch-input line carried 0%. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded. Suspensions are restricted to specified products or authorised uses, including wind-energy substation manufacture; do not assume ordinary shipboard equipment qualifies.

The selected lines carry fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls. For equipment containing or relying on these gases, confirm any labelling and import declaration document-code requirements with the relevant authority or your customs broker. Obtain the gas type and charge, or confirmation that no such gas is present, and have your broker confirm the declaration requirement. Confirm the commodity code from the complete assembly's drawings, function and voltage.

Specify the vessel and electrical system

Give the factory the vessel type, flag, installation location and the approval documents your shipyard or surveyor expects. Agree the applicable marine requirements before approving drawings. Check the scope and exclusions of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 when planning supply into Great Britain.

Specify supply voltage and frequency, fault level, busbar material and size, incoming and outgoing circuits, breaker makes and ratings, protection settings, generator synchronising and shore-supply interlocks. Define enclosure corrosion protection, cable entries, ventilation, vibration conditions and access for maintenance. Official marine guidance requires maintenance to be considered when designing, installing or constructing electrical equipment.

Agree a witnessed factory test plan covering insulation, protective-circuit continuity, control logic, alarms and simulated loss of supply. Match reports to the supplied assembly and drawing revision. Use testing and certification support to organise the evidence review.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order, not a quote: 20 compact marine distribution boards under 8537 10 98 99, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £1,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £31,800. Duty at 2% is £636. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £32,436, so it is £6,487.20. Import taxes total £7,123.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £636 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Build: compare busbars, breakers, terminals, wiring identifiers and enclosure materials with the approved drawings and bill of materials.

Functions: witness interlocks, protection settings, alarms, generator controls and emergency-supply changeover against the agreed test procedure.

Records: match serial numbers, drawing revisions and controller software versions to individual test records; check gas declarations and any required labels.

Arrival: inspect for moisture, corrosion, loose connections, damaged seals and distorted doors before installation. Record defects and compare with dispatch photographs. Plan checks through the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A board can match the cabinet dimensions yet have the wrong fault rating, protection settings or supply interlocks. Substituted breakers and thinner busbars also undermine the agreed design. Freeze the bill of materials and require approval for substitutions before manufacture.

Marine installation problems include inaccessible terminals, cable entries that conflict with the vessel layout and seals damaged during transport. Resolve access and cable routing on the drawings, then inspect the actual assembly. A component certificate alone does not show that the complete board meets the agreed vessel specification.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on marine switchboards from China?

Ordinary marine switchboard lines carry 2% duty. Separate touch-input panels without displays carry 0%. The supplied tariff snapshot records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Which commodity code covers a marine distribution board?

8537 10 98 99 commonly covers other assembled boards up to 1,000 V. Higher-voltage boards and separately imported controllers use different lines. Confirm from the drawings and function.

Does a marine switchboard need CE or UKCA marking?

Check the electrical safety rules' scope and exclusions for the exact equipment and intended supply. Where those rules apply, use the published heading guide to prepare questions for the relevant authority about applicable CE or UKCA marking and conformity documentation.

What should I ask a Chinese switchboard factory to test?

Agree insulation, protective-circuit continuity, protection settings, interlocks, alarms and supply-changeover tests. Ask for assembly-specific records and witness the functions relevant to your vessel.
