Sourcing PV DC combiner boxes from China

Photovoltaic DC combiner boxes from China normally pay 2% UK duty across the relevant voltage bands, with no anti-dumping duty shown. Confirm the applicable electrical safety scope, conformity documentation and CE or UKCA marking requirements for sale in Great Britain with the relevant authority. Duty and classification for photovoltaic combiner boxes

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, assembled photovoltaic DC combiner boxes fall within heading 8537 when equipped with switching or protecting apparatus for electricity distribution. The table shows build variants sharing the same tariff lines. Boxes not exceeding 1,000 volts are candidates for 8537 10 98 99; boxes above that voltage, but not exceeding 72.5 kilovolts, are candidates for 8537 20 91 90.

Both relevant lines carry 2% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty shown. Their conditional suspensions are for specified products or authorised uses, rather than general photovoltaic combiner boxes. Both lines attach fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls. Obtain a written gas-content statement; for equipment containing or relying on these gases, ask the relevant authority or your customs broker to confirm applicable labelling and customs documentation. Confirm the declaration requirement with your customs broker.

Confirm the commodity code using the assembled box's rated voltage, schematic and component list. Monitoring alone does not establish that a box is a programmable controller. For the wider product family, see control panels and distribution boards.

Specify the DC circuit and the complete assembly

Give the factory the array's maximum open-circuit voltage, string current, number of inputs, output arrangement and earthing design. Specify fuse links and holders, DC isolators, surge protection, busbars, terminals and cable sizes by exact make and model. State the required enclosure material, sealing performance, cable entries, mounting arrangement and monitoring interface.

For equipment rated at 75 to 1,500 volts direct current, confirm the applicable electrical safety scope and requirements for technical documentation, a declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking and importer identification before sale in Great Britain with the relevant authority. For boxes with electronics, also confirm whether an electromagnetic compatibility assessment is needed, using the wider-heading guide as a starting point. Ask for assembly reports matching the supplied configuration, rather than relying only on component certificates. The importer must ensure instructions accompany the equipment in easily understandable English.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20 photovoltaic DC combiner boxes under 8537 10 98 99, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 2% is £252. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,852, so it is £2,570.40. Import taxes total £2,822.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £252 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Protection: compare fuse, isolator and surge protection markings with the approved component list; check their DC ratings against the specified circuit.

Wiring: trace polarity and string numbering against the schematic; check terminal tightening, cable support, protective bonding and clearance around live connections.

Enclosure: on arrival, check door seals, gland fit, unused entry plugs, mounting damage and signs of moisture; compare internal construction with the approved sample.

Records: match the rating plate, serial identification, schematic and test records to the delivered box; review insulation, protective continuity and monitoring checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A substituted isolator may carry an alternating-current rating without evidence for the specified DC circuit. Reversed polarity, loose terminals and undersized busbars can undermine an otherwise tidy assembly. Freeze the component list and wiring drawing before production, then check the bulk goods against them.

An enclosure report does not establish the sealing performance of a box with different glands or drilled entries. Monitoring reports can also refer to a different sensor arrangement. Ask for evidence covering the delivered build and investigate moisture, damaged seals or unexplained component changes before energising.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on photovoltaic DC combiner boxes from China?

The relevant lines 8537 10 98 99 and 8537 20 91 90 carry 2% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is shown in the supplied tariff snapshot.

Does a higher-voltage combiner box use a different commodity code?

Yes. The relevant split is at 1,000 volts: consider 8537 10 98 99 at or below this voltage and 8537 20 91 90 above it, up to 72.5 kilovolts. Confirm classification from the complete assembly.

Are certificates for the fuses and switches enough?

Ask for documentation and verification covering the assembled box as well. Component certificates do not show that its wiring, thermal behaviour, protection arrangement and enclosure match your specification.

What should I ask about the tariff's F-gas control?

Ask whether the box contains or relies on fluorinated greenhouse gases. Obtain a written statement and have your customs broker confirm the applicable declaration documentation; for gas-containing switchgear, confirm any labelling requirements with the relevant authority.
