Sourcing crane pendant stations from China

Crane pendant control stations from China normally carry 2% UK duty under 8537 10 98 99; the wider heading ranges from 0% to 2%. Check electrical safety obligations against the rated voltage and verify the pendant with the crane's control circuit. Cambridge China Bridge sources crane pendant control stations.

Duty on assembled crane pendant stations

Heading 8537 covers assemblies equipped with switching apparatus for electrical control. An ordinary wired crane pendant containing multiple switches is a candidate for 8537 10 98 99. The table shows pendant configurations sharing that tariff line, rather than separate tariff categories. Loose switches and empty housings need separate classification. See the wider control panels and controllers guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the relevant line carries 2% duty for goods from China, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing measures. Its duty suspensions cover specified products or authorised uses; do not assume a crane pendant qualifies. The tariff also attaches a fluorinated greenhouse gas import control. Confirm its application and the declaration requirement with your customs broker. Products containing regulated fluorinated gas must be labelled.

Confirm the commodity code from the assembled circuit, rated voltage and actual functions. Ask the factory to identify any fluorinated gas in the supplied goods before shipment. A description such as crane spare part is insufficient to establish the classification.

Specify the pendant and its crane connection

Provide the crane circuit drawing and specify each motion, button sequence, contact arrangement and directional interlock. State whether the pendant switches a control circuit or carries motor current. Agree the operating voltage, contact ratings, terminal layout, cable cores, connector pin assignment and emergency-stop contacts. Specify cable length, strain relief, suspension support, enclosure sealing and operation with the intended gloves.

Confirm with the relevant authority how electrical equipment safety rules apply to the pendant's rated voltage, including the stated ranges of 50 to 1,000 volts alternating current or 75 to 1,500 volts direct current. Ask which technical documentation, declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking and importer identification are required for the exact model. Assess electromagnetic compatibility for electronic versions and hazardous-substance restrictions unless excluded. For a pendant incorporated into machinery, confirm how it should be considered within the machine's conformity assessment. Request model-specific evidence through testing and certification.

HSE guidance calls for emergency-stop controls within easy reach where necessary. Agree with the crane integrator how the pendant's stop contacts interact with the complete control circuit, and how restarting is prevented after a stop. Approve a working sample using the intended circuit before releasing production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 20 industrial crane pendant control assemblies, not a quotation under 8537 10 98 99, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 2% is £252. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,852, so it is £2,570.40. Import taxes total £2,822.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £252 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Controls: check directional legends, button return, staged operation and interlocks against the approved sample. Confirm that opposite motion commands behave as agreed.

Wiring: compare contact blocks, terminal numbers and connector pin assignments with the approved drawing. Record continuity results for released and operated controls, including the emergency stop.

Enclosure and cable: check gasket seating, button seals, cable entry, strain relief and suspension support. Look for trapped wires, loose terminals and damage after transport.

Integration and documents: have the crane integrator verify motion mapping, stop operation and restart behaviour before use. Match supplied model identifiers to drawings and conformity documents. Plan shipment and arrival checks with the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

Similar-looking pendants can have different contact sequences or connector wiring. A replacement may reverse a motion, select the wrong speed or fail to open the intended stop circuit. Freeze the approved wiring drawing and contact-block specification, and require approval before substitutions.

A cable gland may seal the enclosure without supporting the hanging cable. Poor strain relief can pull wires from terminals, while damaged button boots or an uneven gasket can admit dirt and moisture. Check cable support separately from sealing, and investigate any sticky button or intermittent connection before installation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on crane pendant control stations from China?

Ordinary assembled wired pendants classified under 8537 10 98 99 carry 2% duty. The supplied tariff record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing measures for that line.

Can I replace my crane pendant with one that looks the same?

Compare the circuit drawing, contact sequence, voltage, connector wiring and stop contacts. Test the proposed replacement with the intended crane control circuit before approving it.

Does a low-voltage pendant need electrical safety assessment?

Check the actual rated voltage against the electrical equipment safety rules. Also assess electronic functions, hazardous-substance restrictions and integration into the crane; voltage alone does not settle every obligation.

What should the Chinese factory supply with the pendant?

Ask for the wiring drawing, contact schedule, connector pin assignment, installation instructions, agreed test results and applicable model-specific conformity documents.
