Sourcing magnetic construction toys from China
Magnetic construction toys from China carry UK duty of 0% to 4%, depending on material and classification. Toys sold in Great Britain must meet essential toy-safety requirements; accessible magnets need particular attention. Cambridge China Bridge sources magnetic construction toys.

Duty by material and set contents
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 18 November 2026, heading 9503 covers toys, including construction sets. Plastic magnetic construction toys carry 4%; hand-made wooden construction toys and construction toys of other materials carry 0%. Other toy sets carry 4%, but a boxed construction set should first be assessed under the construction-toy lines.
The selected lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The tariff attaches a cultural-goods export licence measure to these lines; ask your customs broker to confirm its applicability if exporting. This is listed as an export measure rather than an import control on ordinary new magnetic construction toys.
Confirm the commodity code using the materials, construction function and complete set contents. A mixed play outfit needs assessment rather than an automatic set classification. See the wider toys and games guide for other products within this heading.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plastic magnetic construction sets and toys | 9503 00 35 00 | 4% | None |
| Hand-made wooden magnetic construction toys | 9503 00 39 10 | 0% | None |
| Magnetic construction toys of other materials, excluding hand-made wood | 9503 00 39 90 | 0% | None |
| Mixed magnetic play outfits, if classified as other toy sets | 9503 00 70 00 | 4% | None |
Specify magnet retention and building compatibility
Specify tile or rod dimensions, shell material, magnet position and polarity, joint construction, colours, piece assortment and compatibility with your existing range. Approve a sample that builds the intended shapes. Record how magnets are enclosed, and agree checks for shell cracking, joint separation and magnet movement after handling.
For Great Britain, toys must meet essential safety requirements. Importers must check the manufacturer's conformity assessment and provide their identifying details and postal address. CE or UKCA marking can be used through the applicable conformity route. Agree model-specific safety evidence and the declaration of conformity before ordering; discuss the scope through testing and certification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 400 boxed plastic magnetic construction sets under 9503 00 35 00, invoiced at £24,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £27,000. Duty at 4% is £1,080. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £28,080, so it is £5,616. Import taxes total £6,696; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,080 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Magnet enclosure: check seams, welds and retaining features against the approved sample; investigate cracking, loose magnets or exposed inserts.
Building performance: assemble the advertised structures, check polarity and fit, and compare connection strength across production samples.
Contents and finish: check the agreed assortment, colours, smooth edges, clear surfaces and absence of trapped debris or sharp moulding flash.
Labels and records: check the conformity marking, importer details, model identification and agreed English warnings against the supporting documents. Arrival inspection complements the agreed safety assessment; see quality inspection.

What goes wrong
Failure points include shells splitting at welded seams, magnets moving inside tiles, reversed polarity, weak connections and substituted plastics. A visually matching sample can behave differently from production. Keep the approved sample and require the factory to disclose changes to magnets, materials and joining methods.
Ingested magnets can cause serious internal injury. OPSS says businesses must remove products containing small magnets that breach toy-safety requirements from the market. Quarantine suspect stock and investigate the affected models before releasing it for sale.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For own-brand ranges, see sourcing for brands.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on magnetic construction toys from China?
Plastic construction toys carry 4%; hand-made wooden and other-material construction toys carry 0%. Other toy sets carry 4%. Classification depends on the actual product and set contents.
Can magnetic construction toys use CE marking in Great Britain?
Yes, through the applicable conformity route. Great Britain recognises CE marking and also permits UKCA marking. Check the supporting assessment and declaration, rather than relying on the printed mark.
What should I ask the magnetic tile factory to specify?
Ask for shell material, magnet position and polarity, enclosure method, joining process, dimensions, assortment and compatibility. Keep an approved building sample and agree how production changes will be disclosed.
What should I check when magnetic building sets arrive?
Check cracked seams, loose or exposed magnets, polarity, building stability, piece assortment and labels. Hold suspect stock while investigating; visual inspection alone does not establish toy safety.
