Sourcing children's electronic dance mats from China
Specify the play functions, power supply and printed surface before comparing factories. Classification depends on whether the mat is a standalone toy or video-game equipment. Cambridge China Bridge sources dance mats and coordinates samples, compliance checks and inspection.

Define the product before choosing a factory
An electronic dance mat detects foot pressure and responds with music, spoken prompts or lights. A standalone musical toy differs from a mat that runs a television game or controls a separate console. Send the factory a description of the complete play sequence, including what happens when several touch zones are pressed together and what equipment the household must provide.
For an Amazon FBA range, separate the product specification from the warehouse packing brief. Identify the intended user, mat construction, folding method, controller position, battery or USB arrangement and accessories supplied. Request a working sample with the proposed electronics and surface material. A sample with different circuitry or an unprinted cover cannot settle whether the finished branded product is suitable.
Control artwork, materials and power options
Provide print files, colour references and a drawing showing how the artwork aligns with the sensors. Specify the surface finish, backing grip, seam construction and cleaning method. Test whether printed arrows remain understandable during play and whether folding damages conductive tracks. Ask the factory for order quantities and production timing after it has reviewed the approved artwork and construction.
Record the speaker controls, available languages, game modes, cable exits and battery-compartment design. If USB power is offered, establish whether the pack includes a power adaptor or only a cable. Keep the bill of materials tied to the approved sample, including inks and plastic layers. Our ecommerce sellers service can coordinate the factory brief, sample comparison and packing requirements.
UK duty depends on the game function
The UK Trade Tariff API, read on 3 December 2026, gives the candidate rates below. A predominantly plastic standalone musical toy points towards heading 9503; a television video-game unit or dedicated video-game controller needs consideration under 9504 50. Connecting a cable to a television does not establish classification by itself. Ask your customs agent to confirm the code from the actual functions and construction.
The review included China anti-dumping, countervailing and suspension measures. The toy line contains an authorised-use suspension limited to cable car scale models for printing; it does not describe a dance mat. Budget using the ordinary rate unless your customs agent establishes otherwise, and repeat the China measure check when preparing the import declaration.
| Product type | Candidate commodity code | Ordinary third-country duty |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone musical toy, predominantly plastic | 9503009590 | 4% |
| TV video-game equipment or dedicated controller, subject to classification | 9504500000 | 0% |
UK toy, battery and electrical obligations
For a children's toy, the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011 require a safety assessment, conformity assessment, technical documentation, a declaration of conformity and the relevant marking. A business having toys made and selling them under its trademark is a manufacturer for these purposes. Agree the applicable assessment route and English warnings before approving packaging; a marketplace acceptance message does not establish compliance.
The Batteries and Accumulators (Placing on the Market) Regulations 2008 cover batteries and appliances into which batteries may be incorporated. Assess the electronic mat under the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2012, subject to scope and exemptions. Also check WEEE coverage: electrical toys and games equipment require a separate waste-electrical assessment. Request evidence for the supplied configuration, including its printed materials.

Inspect the finished branded mat
The inspection brief should cover every play zone, missed and false inputs, simultaneous presses, sound controls, light functions and shutdown behaviour. Check seams, exposed edges, cable strain relief, battery access and backing grip. Repeat the agreed play and folding checks on production samples, then compare internal components and printing against the approved reference. Appearance inspection alone cannot establish electrical or chemical safety.
Inspect retail packs for the correct model, artwork, accessories, instructions and traceability details. Confirm that outer-carton contents match the packing list and that the mat arrives without permanent folds that prevent use. Keep photographs and functional results linked to the production batch. Cambridge China Bridge can arrange sample review and factory inspection, with specialist testing scoped separately where required.
Frequently asked questions
Does custom printing change the compliance work?
It can change the materials being assessed. Give the assessor the actual inks, surface layers and finished artwork, and prevent substitutions after sample approval.
Is a television-connected mat always video-game equipment?
Classification depends on what the complete product does. Give your customs agent the game description, controller connections and operating demonstration rather than relying on the sales name.
Can the factory use an existing test report?
Ask the assessor whether it covers your exact electronics, materials, power arrangement and branding configuration. A report for a similar-looking mat is insufficient evidence of that match.
