Kettlebell duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 9506 covers exercise and sports equipment. Fixed-weight kettlebells fit the other general exercise equipment line, 9506 91 90 00, carrying 2% duty on goods from China. The supplied extract shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension on that line. The table shows product variants sharing this code.

The tariff attaches cat and dog fur import and export controls: imports and exports of that fur and products containing it are banned. Specify materials without such fur. It also lists a cultural-object export licence control; ask your customs broker to confirm its relevance if you later export the goods.

Confirm the commodity code against the actual construction, especially for adjustable designs. For the wider heading, see dumbbells from China. Allow separately for import VAT at 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.

Specify the weight, handle and body

State whether the bell is cast iron or steel, solid or hollow, and fixed-weight or adjustable. Agree the marked weight and acceptable weight tolerance, handle diameter and clearance, base flatness, coating material, colour and logo position. Keep an approved sample for comparison and prohibit material substitutions without approval.

Consumer products supplied in Great Britain must be safe. Agree checks for casting cracks, handle attachment and coating durability before production. For coated handles, identify the material and arrange chemical testing appropriate to skin contact through testing and certification. Specify individual protection and pallet restraint so bells cannot strike each other in transit.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 500 assorted fixed-weight kettlebells, illustrative order under 9506 91 90 00, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £17,500. Duty at 2% is £350. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £17,850, so it is £3,570. Import taxes total £3,920; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £350 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Weight: weigh sampled bells from each marked weight and compare the results with the agreed tolerance, rather than checking the moulded number alone.

Handle and body: check grip surfaces for seams, burrs and sharp edges; inspect handle roots, welds where present, and the body for cracks or repairs.

Finish and base: compare coating and logos with the approved sample, check for peeling and exposed metal, and stand each sampled bell on a flat surface to check rocking.

Packing and identification: open arrival cartons to check impact damage, corrosion and movement inside the packing. Check weight markings, product references, batch records and importer contact details against the approved artwork.

What goes wrong

A bell can look correct yet weigh differently from its marking. Rough handle seams can cut hands, hidden casting defects can weaken the handle roots, uneven bases rock, and poorly bonded coatings peel. Hollow bodies may have loose internal material. Do not accept cosmetic repainting as evidence that a structural defect has been repaired.

Dense loads can break through weak cartons or shift on pallets. Agree packing with the factory and freight provider, inspect before shipment and repeat damage checks on arrival. Keep suspect bells apart while the supplier investigates. Set the inspection scope using quality inspection explained.
