UK duty on dumbbells from China

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 3 October 2026, heading 9506 covered general exercise equipment and other sports goods. Fixed dumbbells fall within the other exercise-equipment line, 9506 91 90 00, carrying 2% duty from China. The table shows different dumbbell finishes sharing that line. The adjustable-resistance apparatus line also carries 2%; confirm the classification of adjustable designs rather than assuming that a weight selector determines the code.

The supplied tariff records show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions on these exercise-equipment lines. They attach cat and dog fur import and export controls: imports and exports of that fur and products made from it are banned. Specify no such material. A cultural-object export licence measure is also attached; ask your customs broker to confirm its relevance if subsequently exporting the goods.

Confirm the commodity code using the product construction and adjustment mechanism before placing the order. The fitness equipment guide covers the wider heading. For the illustrative order, follow the calculation method in UK import duty and VAT.

Specify the weight, handle and coating

State whether the dumbbells are fixed or adjustable, sold individually or in pairs, and intended for home or gym use. Specify the weight range and agreed weight tolerance, core material, head shape, handle dimensions, grip texture, attachment method and coating material. Approve a finished sample and prohibit material substitutions without written approval.

Consumer dumbbells supplied in Great Britain must be safe under the General Product Safety Regulations. Agree tests for handle retention, coating adhesion and, for adjustable models, plate retention and selector operation. For rubber or plastic grips in prolonged skin contact, confirm with the relevant authority which UK REACH chemical restrictions apply, using the site's yoga-mat guide as a starting point; arrange testing for the actual material formulation.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 500 fixed dumbbells, illustrative order under 9506 91 90 00, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £17,500. Duty at 2% is £350. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £17,850, so it is £3,570. Import taxes total £3,920; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £350 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Weight: weigh samples against the agreed tolerance, check matching pairs and compare moulded or printed weight markings with measured weight.

Assembly: check head attachment, handle straightness, sharp edges and corrosion. On adjustable models, check every selector position and confirm that unselected plates remain in the cradle.

Coating: check cracks, bubbles, exposed metal, adhesion and colour against the approved sample. Review chemical test reports for the materials supplied; smell alone cannot establish compliance.

Packing: open cartons to check counts, separation between handles and heads, moisture protection and carton damage. Repeat arrival checks before releasing stock. Agree the sampling plan through the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A dumbbell can look correct while its weight is wrong or its head attachment is weak. Coatings may split around the handle joint, grip surfaces may have sharp casting or plating defects, and adjustable selectors may fail to retain a plate. Treat these as explicit acceptance checks rather than relying on photographs.

Dense goods can break through weak cartons or rub against neighbouring dumbbells in transit. Agree protective separation and packing with the factory, then inspect packed goods before shipment and again on arrival. Keep the approved sample, inspection results and batch records together.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on dumbbells from China?

The supplied tariff records show 2% for the relevant exercise-equipment lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Fixed dumbbells use 9506 91 90 00; confirm the code for adjustable designs.

How do I check dumbbell weight accuracy?

Agree a weight tolerance before production, weigh samples from the shipment and compare each measured weight with its marking. Check that matched pairs meet the same specification.

What should I test on adjustable dumbbells?

Check selector operation, plate retention, handle attachment and cradle fit throughout the adjustment range. Agree the test method and acceptance criteria before production.

Can I approve rubber-coated dumbbells by smell?

No. Smell does not establish chemical compliance. Confirm the coating and grip formulation, review relevant test reports and check coating adhesion against the approved sample.
