Load-bearing products where failure means injury
Fitness equipment is bought on price and specification like anything else, but it differs in one important respect: when it fails, someone is usually underneath it or attached to it. That moves durability out of the quality column and into the safety column.
It is also a category where the same visual product spans an enormous range of build quality. A rack, a bench or a machine can look identical in a photograph at three very different price points, and the difference is in steel gauge, weld quality, bearing grade and the things you cannot see.
Specify the load path, not the appearance
State the rated load and the safety factor, and ask how they were determined. A rating asserted without a test method behind it is a marketing number.
Specify steel grade, tube wall thickness and section, weld type and inspection, fastener grade, and the finish system including pretreatment, because corrosion at a weld or fixing is where load-bearing equipment fails years later.
Specify bearings, bushes, cables, pulleys and gas struts by brand where they matter. On cable machines the cable, its terminations and the pulley bearings are the components that decide whether the machine still feels right after a year of use.
Ask which recognised standards the equipment is built and tested to, and request the test reports rather than a statement. Check the scope covers your configuration and the load you intend to rate it at.
Domestic and commercial are different products
A machine rated for home use and one rated for gym use are not the same machine with different marketing. Duty cycle, frame construction, bearing specification and finish all differ, and a domestic-grade product placed in a commercial setting will fail early and possibly badly.
Be explicit about the intended environment and require the supplier to confirm the rating with evidence. If you are supplying gyms, specify commercial duty and expect to pay for it.
Where the product will be used in a commercial setting, your customer has their own obligations around equipment safety and maintenance, so the documentation you pass on matters to them. Instructions, assembly guidance and maintenance schedules in English are part of what you are selling.
Assembly, instructions and the returns problem
Most fitness equipment ships flat and is assembled by the customer, which makes assembly quality part of product quality. Misaligned holes, unlabelled fixings and poor instructions generate returns, support cost and, on load-bearing equipment, incorrectly assembled products.
Specify the instructions as a deliverable in their own right: English, illustrated, with the fixings labelled to match. Specify that fixing packs are labelled by step rather than supplied loose in one bag.
Then test it: have someone who has not seen the product assemble a sample from the flat pack, and treat the problems they hit as specification changes.
Electrical and connected equipment
Treadmills, bikes and rowers with consoles are electrical products, so electrical safety applies along with waste electrical producer obligations and battery obligations where cells are present.
If the console connects to an app or a network, consumer connectable product security requirements may also apply, with their own compliance statement obligations. This is easily missed on equipment that buyers think of as mechanical.
Freight and the practical economics
Fitness equipment is heavy, which is unusual in a world where most low-value imports pay on volume. Weight-based charging changes the calculation: consolidation and full container loads become more attractive, and air freight is rarely viable.
Delivery is its own problem. Heavy items into domestic addresses or upper-floor gyms need handling arrangements agreed in advance, and this is regularly excluded from quotations.
Damage in transit on painted and chromed surfaces is common, so specify protection at contact points and test the packaging by shipping a unit through the channel your customer would use.
