Lane-rope classification and UK duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 9506 covered sports and exercise equipment, swimming pools and paddling pools. Its rates for goods from China ranged from 0% to 4%. The other sports equipment line, 9506 99 90 00, carried 2%. This is a candidate classification for complete lane ropes, rather than a named lane-rope entry. The table shows product variants against that same candidate line.

The supplied tariff record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for this line. It attaches an import control on cat and dog fur; confirm its declaration requirements with your customs broker for the specified synthetic and metal construction. It also lists cat and dog fur export control and a DCMS Export Licence entry. Ask your broker to distinguish these export entries from the checks for your import.

Confirm the commodity code using the complete assembly, materials and intended use. Have separately supplied floats, cables and tensioners assessed individually. For the wider heading, see our swimming goggles guide.

Specify floats, cable and pool connections

Specify the installed length between pool anchors, float shape and diameter, colour sequence, cable material, end fittings and tensioner adjustment range. Supply drawings or photographs of the pool anchors and storage reel. Agree whether the delivered assembly includes hooks, protective sleeves and spare floats.

Agree tests for chlorine exposure, outdoor sunlight where relevant, float buoyancy, cable retention and tensioner operation. Ask for evidence supporting wave-reduction claims rather than accepting appearance alone. For consumer-use products in Great Britain, the general product safety rules require safe products; assess sharp edges, exposed cable ends and entanglement risks.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 24 complete swimming pool lane ropes, illustrative only under 9506 99 90 00, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £350 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,850. Duty at 2% is £57. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,907, so it is £581.40. Import taxes total £638.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £57 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: check assembled length, float diameter, colour sequence and end-fitting dimensions against the approved specification.

Floats: check cracks, moulding burrs, free movement and buoyancy; compare material and colour with the approved sample.

Cable and tensioner: check termination security, exposed strands, hook closure and smooth tension adjustment under the agreed test conditions.

Packing and arrival: check tangled coils, crushed floats, missing fittings and abrasion; trial-fit an assembly to the actual pool anchors before accepting the batch.

What goes wrong

A rope measured without its end fittings may not fit the pool. Hooks may suit the factory's sample anchor but not yours. Floats can crack, fade or lose buoyancy, while poor cable terminations slip and tensioners seize after exposure to pool water.

Keep an approved complete assembly and record the agreed measurement and test methods. Resolve anchor compatibility before production, then compare shipment samples and arrival condition with that assembly. Use the quality inspection guide to define what the inspector records.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on swimming pool lane ropes from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 2% for 9506 99 90 00, other sports equipment. Confirm that classification for your complete lane-rope assembly; heading 9506 overall ranges from 0% to 4%.

What measurements should I send the factory?

Send the distance between installed anchors, drawings of the anchor connections, float dimensions, colour sequence and the required tensioner adjustment range.

How do I check resistance to pool water?

Agree chlorine-exposure conditions and acceptance criteria before ordering. Check floats, cable terminations and tensioner operation after exposure, using the approved assembly for comparison.

Can replacement floats use the complete rope's commodity code?

Do not assume so. Give your customs broker the material, construction and intended use of separately supplied floats or fittings so their classification can be assessed individually.
