Sourcing insecticidal fly baits from China
Finished insecticidal fly baits from China normally carry 6% UK duty across the relevant insecticide lines. Before ordering for Great Britain, confirm the exact product's authorisation or valid transitional approval route and its active substance supplier listing where required. Cambridge China Bridge sources insecticidal fly baits.

6% duty on finished fly bait preparations
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 3808 covers prepared or retail-packed insecticides and other pest-control products. The selected insecticide lines carry 6% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty shown. The table identifies possible classifications by active substance chemistry; inclusion does not establish that a formulation is approved for sale.
The suspension to 0.00 % under 3808 91 90 90 is restricted to Indoxacarb and its specified isomer fixed on a silicon dioxide support. Its footnote excludes mixtures, preparations and products made from different components containing those products. Do not assume finished fly bait qualifies. Confirm the commodity code using the full formulation and presentation. See the wider pesticides guide.
The tariff attaches waste controls to these lines. Waste shipped under notification needs consent before shipment; ask your broker to confirm admissibility and requirements for waste from China. The other-insecticides line also has an ozone-depleting-substance restriction; imports of those substances require a licence for permitted uses. The pyrethroid line carries fluorinated-gas import controls: confirm their applicability with your broker using the formulation. These checks are separate from product approval.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pyrethroid-based fly bait preparations | 3808 91 10 90 | 6% | None |
| Carbamate-based fly bait preparations | 3808 91 30 00 | 6% | None |
| Organophosphorus-based fly bait preparations | 3808 91 40 00 | 6% | None |
| Other insecticidal fly bait preparations | 3808 91 90 90 | 6% | None |
Specify the bait and its approval route
Specify the active substance and concentration, granular or paste presentation, attractant composition, target fly, intended use area, application method and intended user. Agree pack material, closure, storage conditions and batch identification. Ask for batch assay and stability evidence, plus efficacy evidence matching the intended fly and application method.
Before ordering, confirm the exact product's Great Britain authorisation or valid transitional route with HSE. For insecticides moving from the Control of Pesticides Regulations to biocidal product authorisation, active substance approval determines the transition. Check the relevant GB Article 95 supplier listing where required and retain supply-chain evidence. Review labels and safety data sheets against the applicable chemical requirements.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 600 sealed retail packs of granulated fly bait, illustrative only under 3808 91 90 90, invoiced at £4,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,500. Duty at 6% is £390. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,890, so it is £1,378. Import taxes total £1,768; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £390 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: compare the delivered formulation, product name and intended uses with the approval documentation and agreed specification.
Batch: check active substance assay against the agreed tolerance, trace the batch to its certificate and retain a sealed sample.
Bait condition: inspect granules for moisture, caking, dust and uneven coating; inspect paste for separation, drying and inconsistent texture.
Packaging: check seals, leakage, net contents, batch identification and label legibility against approved artwork. Agree these checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong
An approval for a different formulation is presented as covering the ordered bait, or a supplier listing cannot be traced to the active substance used. Under the Control of Pesticides Regulations, advertising, selling, supplying, storing or using a non-approved product is an offence. Resolve the approval route before placing the order.
Damp granules cake, excessive dust makes handling inconsistent, paste separates and seals fail during transport. A batch can meet an active-content assay yet differ from the agreed bait texture or attractant composition. Compare arrival samples with the retained reference sample and investigate differences before distributing the stock.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on fly baits from China?
The selected insecticide lines carry 6% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is shown. The narrow suspension on the other-insecticides line should not be assumed to cover finished bait.
Can I sell a fly bait that is approved in China?
Chinese approval does not establish the required Great Britain route. Confirm the exact product's authorisation or valid transitional approval and the supplier listing where required before ordering.
How do I check a batch of granulated fly bait?
Check active substance assay, batch traceability, moisture, caking, dust, coating consistency and pack seals against the agreed specification. Retain a sealed sample for comparison.
Is a supplier's active substance listing enough?
No. A supplier listing and product authorisation serve different purposes. Confirm the product's approval route as well as the relevant supplier listing and supply-chain evidence.
