Sourcing industrial universal joints from China
Selected industrial universal joint, shaft and cast-part lines carry 0% to 4% UK duty from China. Confirm the code from the material and supplied assembly; machinery safety rules cover qualifying removable mechanical transmission devices. Specify torque at the working angle and speed. Cambridge China Bridge sources industrial universal joints.

Duty depends on the supplied assembly
Heading 8483 includes shaft couplings, including universal joints, transmission shafts and transmission parts. The table distinguishes cast universal joints from articulated shafts and separately supplied cast parts. These are classification candidates: the shaft rows apply to shafts, rather than automatically to a loose joint. For belt-drive components, see our guide to sourcing V-belt pulleys.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected cast-joint and cast-part lines carried 0% duty on goods from China; the selected shaft lines carried 4%. These selected lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control. Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.
Give your broker the drawing, material, manufacturing method and description of the complete shipment to confirm the commodity code. Do not use a cast-steel code for a forged joint without checking. For the wider coupling family, see flexible shaft couplings.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Universal joints of cast iron or cast steel, other | 8483 60 20 90 | 0% | None |
| Articulated transmission shafts, other | 8483 10 50 90 | 4% | None |
| Other transmission shafts supplied with joint assemblies | 8483 10 95 90 | 4% | None |
| Cast iron or cast steel transmission parts supplied separately, other | 8483 90 81 90 | 0% | None |
Torque, working angle and shaft connection
Specify continuous and peak torque, shaft speed, operating angle, duty cycle and reversing loads together. Ask the factory to confirm the rating for that combination. Define the joint arrangement, bore or spline, keyway, shaft retention, overall length and installation envelope on an approved drawing.
Specify yoke and cross materials, heat treatment, bearing construction, seal material, grease and relubrication access. Agree allowable backlash and the sample load test before production. For paired joints, show the required yoke phasing and installation geometry.
For Great Britain, the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations cover removable devices transmitting power between self-propelled machinery or a tractor and another machine at its first fixed bearing. If your assembly meets that definition, conformity assessment, a declaration of conformity and relevant conformity marking are required. Establish the supplied product's status before ordering.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of industrial universal joints under 8483 60 20 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Fit: gauge bores, splines, keyways and retaining features against the approved drawing; trial-fit the joint to the intended shafts.
Movement: articulate through the agreed working range and check for binding, uneven resistance and excessive play.
Materials and lubrication: match material and hardness records to the batch; check bearing retention, seals, grease provision and access to lubrication points.
Running test: test a sample at the agreed torque, speed and angle; record vibration, temperature rise and backlash before and after. Use quality inspection to define the shipment checks.

What goes wrong
A joint can fit the shaft yet fail under the operating angle and load. Poor yoke phasing, tight bearing cups, loose retention, unsuitable grease and inadequate sealing can produce binding, vibration, heat or early wear. A catalogue torque figure alone does not establish suitability.
Reject undocumented changes to the cross, bearings or heat treatment. Keep the approved sample and drawing revision, and record arrival checks before installation. Agree how the factory will investigate wear or play found during the sample test.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on industrial universal joints from China?
The selected cast universal joint line carries 0%. Selected articulated and other transmission shaft lines carry 4%. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty appears on these selected lines.
Which universal joint specification should I send a Chinese factory?
Send the shaft drawing, continuous and peak torque, speed, working angle, duty cycle, connection details, bearing construction and lubrication requirements.
Do industrial universal joints need CE or UKCA marking?
Establish the supplied product's status. Qualifying removable mechanical transmission devices fall within machinery safety rules and need conformity assessment, a declaration and relevant marking.
How should I test a universal joint sample?
Check shaft fit, articulation, bearing retention and backlash. Run the agreed load test at the intended speed and angle, recording vibration, temperature rise and changes in play.
