Sourcing flexible shaft couplings from China

The supplied tariff lines for cast-iron or cast-steel flexible shaft couplings and relevant cast parts carry 0% UK duty from China. Confirm classification from the material and supplied assembly; workplace machinery must prevent access to dangerous moving parts. Cambridge China Bridge sources flexible shaft couplings.

Duty on flexible couplings

Heading 8483 includes shaft couplings and other transmission components. This guide focuses on flexible couplings connecting driving and driven shafts. The table shows different coupling designs sharing the supplied cast-iron or cast-steel coupling line, plus a potential line for separately supplied cast parts. It does not establish classification for aluminium, machined-steel or separately supplied rubber elements.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, the listed coupling and cast-parts lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. Those lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control in the supplied extract. Import VAT is normally 20%; see import duty and VAT.

Confirm the commodity code using the drawing, material and contents of the shipment. Distinguish a complete coupling from replacement hubs or flexible elements. See gearboxes and transmission parts for the wider heading.

Specify shaft fit and flexible-element behaviour

Specify coupling design, hub material, shaft bores, bore tolerances, keyways, clamping arrangement and overall envelope. State continuous and peak torque, operating speed, starts, reversals and the driven load. Ask the supplier to identify the rating basis for the actual duty cycle.

Define angular, parallel and axial movement separately. For elastomeric designs, agree the element material, hardness, temperature range and exposure to oil or cleaning chemicals. For disc or bellows designs, agree torsional stiffness and fatigue-test evidence. Check a sample on the intended shafts before approving production.

For workplace machinery, the business using it must take effective measures to prevent access to dangerous moving parts. Plan the coupling guard and maintenance access with the machine installer.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of cast-iron flexible couplings for pump maintenance under 8483 60 20 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure bores, keyways, hub length and assembled spacing against the approved drawing; trial-fit the intended shafts without forcing assembly.

Materials: match hub material records and flexible-element identity to the order; check castings for cracks, porosity and damaged machined surfaces.

Running: test the assembled sample at the agreed load and speed; record vibration, temperature rise, slip and visible element damage against contractual limits.

Arrival: check corrosion, distorted discs or bellows, damaged elastomers and missing fasteners; retain batch identification and compare with the approved sample. Use the inspection guide to plan checks.

What goes wrong

A coupling can fit the shaft yet fail under repeated starts or reversals because the quoted torque rating does not match the duty cycle. Incorrect bore tolerances and keyways cause movement or difficult installation. Excessive misalignment can overload the flexible element and connected bearings.

Unapproved elastomer substitutions can change stiffness and resistance to heat or oil. Thin discs, damaged bellows, casting defects and loose fasteners can escape a visual catalogue comparison. Keep an approved assembly and element sample, and require written approval before material or design changes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on flexible couplings from China?

The supplied cast-iron or cast-steel coupling line, 8483 60 20 90, carries 0% duty from China, with no listed trade remedy. Confirm the code for other materials and separately supplied elements.

How do I specify a replacement flexible coupling?

Provide shaft and keyway drawings, coupling envelope, torque, speed, duty cycle and permitted misalignment. Identify the flexible-element material and trial-fit an approved sample.

What should I check when the couplings arrive?

Check bores, keyways, assembled spacing, flexible-element identity, fasteners, corrosion and transport damage. Compare batch records and sample performance with the agreed specification.

Can I run a flexible coupling without a guard?

For workplace machinery, the business using it must prevent access to dangerous moving parts. Agree suitable guarding and maintenance access with the installer before operation.
