Sourcing gear racks and pinions from China
The selected gear rack, pinion and gearing lines carry 0% UK duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty listed. Match the classification to the material and supplied form, and specify compatible tooth geometry, hardness and backlash before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources gear racks and pinions.

Duty depends on material and supplied form
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected lines within heading 8483 carried 0% duty for goods from China. They list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control. The heading covers gearing and separately presented transmission elements alongside other drive components.
The cast-material code appears twice because racks and pinions share that line. The alloy steel pinion line has a detailed specification; use it only when the complete description matches. The assembly row concerns gearing supplied together. These rows do not provide a general code for every machined steel rack or pinion.
Confirm the commodity code using the drawing, material, manufacturing method and supplied form. For other components within this heading, see gearboxes and transmission parts.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Separately presented cast iron or cast steel gear racks | 8483 90 81 90 | 0% | None |
| Straight-tooth alloy steel pinions meeting the full tariff specification | 8483 90 89 40 | 0% | None |
| Spur or helical rack-and-pinion gearing assemblies, other | 8483 40 21 90 | 0% | None |
Specify the rack and pinion as a matched pair
State tooth module or diametral pitch, pressure angle, straight or helical teeth, helix angle and hand, pinion tooth count, face width and the required backlash. Include rack length, mounting faces, hole positions, pinion bore and keyway, travel, load, speed and lubrication. Send dimensioned drawings rather than relying on a catalogue photograph. For systems using mineral gear oils, see our mineral gear oil sourcing guide.
Agree the material, heat treatment, tooth surface and core hardness, case depth where applicable, tooth finish and measurement method. For joined racks, define end-tooth geometry and joint alignment. Ask for material certificates and inspection records tied to the supplied batch.
Plan safeguarding for the installed drive. For machinery, the supplier must provide the right safeguards and inform buyers of residual risks that could not be designed out. Agree who supplies the guards around the rack-and-pinion engagement.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 300 cast steel gear racks; FOB and freight values are illustrative under 8483 90 81 90, invoiced at £24,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £26,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £26,000, so it is £5,200. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Geometry: measure tooth pitch, profile, rack straightness, mounting faces, holes, pinion bore and keyway against the approved drawing.
Material: match batch identification to material certificates and check surface hardness, core hardness and any specified case depth.
Meshing: run the approved rack and pinion together across the intended travel; check backlash, contact pattern, binding and alignment at rack joints.
Arrival: check for bent racks, chipped teeth, rust and damaged mounting surfaces before fitting. Include these checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong
A rack and pinion can look compatible yet bind because the pressure angle, helix hand or tooth profile differs. Poor rack straightness and misaligned joints cause changing backlash and a knock as the pinion crosses the joint. Approve a meshing sample using the intended mounting arrangement.
Heat-treatment distortion, inadequate tooth hardness and burrs can undermine an otherwise correct drawing. Unsupported packing can bend long racks or damage tooth edges. Specify support along the rack, protected teeth and corrosion protection, then repeat the fit and condition checks on arrival.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on gear racks and pinions from China?
The selected lines carry 0% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty listed. Confirm the code for the material, detailed specification and supplied form.
Can I buy the rack and pinion from different factories?
Yes, but agree the tooth geometry, tolerances and backlash with both factories. Test samples together in the intended mounting arrangement before approving production.
What should I specify for joining gear racks?
Define end-tooth geometry, mounting references, joint alignment and acceptable backlash across the joint. Check pinion travel through the joint on the sample assembly.
What should I check when the racks arrive?
Check straightness, tooth damage, rust, mounting dimensions and batch records. Trial-mesh the supplied pinions and check backlash across the travel before fitting the parts.
