Sourcing industrial flywheels from China

Industrial flywheels from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant general flywheel lines. Confirm the code from the material and supplied form, and assess conformity at component or finished-machine level as appropriate. Specify inertia, speed and shaft fit before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources industrial flywheels.

Duty on industrial flywheels

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8483 covers transmission components, including flywheels and pulleys. General industrial flywheels fall within the cast-iron or cast-steel line or the other-materials line, depending on their construction.

The selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts record no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control on these lines. The table also includes separately supplied transmission parts relevant to a flywheel assembly; their descriptions do not classify a complete flywheel.

Confirm the commodity code against the drawing, material and supplied form. Use the specific alloy-steel gear-wheel line only where a separately supplied toothed component meets its full tariff description. See gearboxes and transmission parts for the wider heading. For belt-drive components, see our V-belt pulley sourcing guide.

Specify inertia, speed and shaft connection

Give the factory the required moment of inertia, operating speed, duty cycle and installation drawing. Specify material grade, manufacturing process, rim and hub geometry, bore fit, keyway or taper, mounting holes and acceptable runout. Agree the balancing method, acceptance limits and identification linking each report to the delivered part.

Agree material traceability, any heat treatment and crack-testing method with your engineer. For replacement flywheels, check shaft fit and clearance against the actual machine. Ask how balance correction will be made and recorded, and specify corrosion protection and support during transport.

Government guidance says components may need individual conformity assessment and marking, although a single marking can cover the overall product for many products. Have the machine builder or compliance adviser assess the supplied configuration before sale; do not treat a generic marking certificate as evidence of the flywheel's speed capability.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: One custom cast-steel industrial flywheel; illustrative order only under 8483 50 20 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match certificates and batch identification to the drawing; review agreed heat-treatment and crack-testing records.

Dimensions: measure bore fit, keyway, mounting holes and rim runout; check assembly clearance and any separately supplied toothed ring.

Balance: match the balancing report to the part identification, agreed method and acceptance limits; record correction locations.

Arrival: inspect for corrosion, impact damage and movement within the packing before installation. Retain photographs and measurement records with the inspection file.

What goes wrong

A flywheel can match the outside diameter yet have the wrong inertia because its rim section or material differs. Bore errors, damaged keyways and eccentric machining can cause poor fit or vibration. A balancing report for a different part does not establish acceptance. Agree how dimensional, material and balance failures will be resolved before dispatch.

When the flywheel is installed in work equipment, the business must manage equipment risks and prevent access to dangerous machinery parts. Have the engineer review guarding, mounting and the consequences of a flywheel failure before running the machine.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on industrial flywheels from China?

The general cast-iron or cast-steel and other-material flywheel lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff facts, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded.

What should I send a Chinese flywheel factory?

Send the drawing, material grade, required inertia, operating speed, duty cycle, shaft connection and agreed dimensional and balancing acceptance limits.

Does an industrial flywheel need CE or UKCA marking?

Assess the supplied configuration. Government guidance says components may require individual conformity assessment and marking, while a single marking can cover the overall product for many products.

How do I check a flywheel before fitting it?

Check material identification, bore and keyway dimensions, runout, the matching balancing report and transport damage. Ask your engineer to review mounting and guarding before operation.
