Sourcing V-belt pulleys from China
V-belt pulley lines under heading 8483 carry 0% UK duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Match the commodity code to the material and construction, and prevent access to dangerous moving parts when the drive is used at work. Cambridge China Bridge sources V-belt pulleys.

Duty and classification for V-belt pulleys
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the pulley lines within heading 8483 carry 0% duty for goods from China. The heading covers transmission components, including flywheels and pulleys. The selected lines have no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control.
Cast iron and cast steel pulleys have a different line from other materials. The spun-metal lines apply only where the goods meet the complete tariff description, including material, dimensions and mounting. A separate non-cast steel pulley line, 8483 50 80 20, has an attached supplementary-unit import measure; confirm the declaration requirement with your customs broker if that description fits.
Confirm the commodity code using the drawing, material and manufacturing process before shipment. For related products and wider heading context, see timing belt pulleys. For bevel gearing, see our bevel gear sourcing guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|

| Spun-metal single or double pulleys meeting the tariff description | 8483 50 80 50 | 0% | None |
| Spun-metal triple pulleys meeting the tariff description | 8483 50 80 60 | 0% | None |

Specify the belt groove and shaft connection
Give the factory the belt profile, groove count, pitch diameter, outside diameter, face width and hub position. Specify the groove angle and finish on the drawing. A matching outside diameter alone does not establish that the pulley will suit the belt or give the intended drive ratio.
State the material grade, bore tolerance, keyway dimensions and whether the pulley uses a finished bore or a taper bush. Identify the bush and fixing screws included. Agree radial and axial runout, balance acceptance, operating speed and corrosion protection. Approve a sample against the intended belt and shaft before releasing production.
For workplace use, the business must prevent access to dangerous moving machinery parts. Include guard clearance in the installation review so the replacement pulley fits within the protective arrangement.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 300 cast iron V-belt pulleys under 8483 50 20 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,000, so it is £2,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Grooves: check profile, spacing, count and surface finish against the approved drawing and belt sample.
Mounting: gauge the bore and keyway, check bush seating and supplied fixings, and trial-fit the approved shaft connection.
Rotation: measure radial and axial runout from the agreed datum and review balance results against the order specification.
Material and packing: match material records to the batch, inspect hubs and rims for cracks, and check corrosion protection and separation between parts. Record these checks during quality inspection and repeat fit and damage checks on arrival.

What goes wrong
A pulley can fit the shaft yet wear the belt because the groove profile is wrong or its edges are rough. An incorrect pitch diameter changes the drive ratio. Eccentric bores, distorted rims and poor balance cause vibration, while an inaccurate taper seat can leave the bush poorly seated.
Keep an approved drawing and sample, require approval for material or tooling changes, and retain inspection results by batch. HSE advises checking that a machine is complete, has all safeguards fitted and is free from defects before use; include that check when commissioning the replacement drive.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on V-belt pulleys from China?
The relevant pulley lines in heading 8483 carry 0% duty from China in the supplied tariff reading, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty.
Which commodity code applies to a cast iron V-belt pulley?
8483 50 20 90 covers other pulleys of cast iron or cast steel. Confirm that the imported goods match this description and are supplied as pulleys rather than a larger assembly.
Can I order a replacement pulley by outside diameter?
Outside diameter alone is insufficient. Match the belt profile, pitch diameter, groove count, bore, keyway, hub position and shaft connection to the existing drive.
What should I inspect when the pulleys arrive?
Check groove geometry, bore and keyway fit, bush seating, runout, cracks and corrosion. Compare the batch with the approved drawing and sample before installing it.
