Sourcing bevel gears from China
The selected bevel-gearing and cast-wheel lines carry 0% UK duty from China. Confirm the code from the supplied form and material, distinguishing gearing from separately supplied wheels. Machinery must have guards or protective devices where risks persist. Cambridge China Bridge sources bevel gears.

Duty on bevel gearing and separate wheels
Heading 8483 covers mechanical transmission components, including bevel and bevel/spur gearing. The table includes specialised garden-machinery lines and the general bevel-gearing line. Its cast-wheel row concerns separately supplied cast-iron or cast-steel transmission elements, subject to classification; it is not a general code for every loose bevel gear.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied extract records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control for these lines. Import VAT is normally 20%; see import duty and VAT.
Confirm the commodity code using drawings, material, shipment contents and intended use. The specialised garden-machinery descriptions include material, geometry and manufacturing-use conditions, so a product name alone does not establish the code. For the wider heading, see gearboxes and transmission parts.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Specified straight or helical bevel gearing for garden machinery manufacture | 8483 40 23 20 | 0% | None |
| Specified straight bevel gearing for garden machinery manufacture | 8483 40 23 30 | 0% | None |
| Other bevel and bevel/spur gearing | 8483 40 23 90 | 0% | None |
| Separately supplied cast-iron or cast-steel bevel wheels, subject to classification | 8483 90 81 90 | 0% | None |
Specify the mating gears and mounting geometry
State whether the teeth are straight or spiral, and specify tooth count, module, pressure angle, ratio, shaft angle, face width and spiral hand where applicable. Include bore, keyway or spline details, mounting distances and drawing datums. Identify whether you need loose wheels, a matched pair or a housed assembly.
Specify steel or casting grade, heat treatment, tooth hardness, case depth where applicable and tooth finish. Give the operating torque, speed, reversals, duty cycle and lubricant. Agree backlash and tooth-contact acceptance limits in the intended mounting arrangement, and approve a sample with its mating gear.
For the assembled machinery, guards or protective devices are required where risks persist. Plan protection around the gear mesh with the machine installer before operation.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of matched bevel-gearing sets for machinery maintenance; values are illustrative under 8483 40 23 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Geometry: measure bores, keyways, splines, face width and mounting dimensions against the approved drawings; verify tooth counts, ratio and spiral hand.
Mesh: assemble the intended mating gears at the specified mounting distances; check backlash, tooth-contact pattern and tight spots through rotation.
Materials: match material and heat-treatment records to the batch; check agreed hardness results and inspect teeth for cracks, burrs, pitting and grinding damage.
Arrival: check tooth-edge impact damage, corrosion and missing paired components; retain pair and batch identification. Plan quality inspection before dispatch as well.

What goes wrong
Gears can share a nominal ratio yet have incompatible tooth geometry, spiral hand or mounting distances. Contact concentrated near a tooth edge can produce noise and premature wear. A replacement wheel may not mesh correctly with the existing pinion, so approve the actual combination rather than relying on catalogue dimensions.
Incorrect heat treatment can leave teeth vulnerable to wear or fracture. Excessive backlash, tight spots and poor surface finish may only become apparent after assembly or loading. Keep the approved drawings and matched sample, require approval before substitutions, and investigate abnormal contact or noise before installation.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on bevel gears from China?
The selected bevel-gearing lines and the conditional cast-wheel line carry 0% duty from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the code for the material and supplied form.
Should I buy bevel gears as a matched pair?
Approve the gear and pinion together in the intended mounting arrangement. For replacements, check compatibility with the existing mating gear and agree backlash and tooth-contact limits.
What should a bevel-gear drawing include?
Include tooth form, tooth count, module, pressure angle, ratio, shaft angle, spiral hand where applicable, face width, bores, keyways or splines, mounting distances, material and heat treatment.
What should I check when bevel gears arrive?
Check tooth damage, corrosion, dimensions and pair identification. Trial-assemble the mating gears, measure backlash and inspect the contact pattern. Compare material and hardness records with the order.
