UK duty on timing belt pulleys

Heading 8483 covers power transmission components, including pulleys. This guide concerns timing belt pulleys rather than belts, gearboxes or complete drives. The table separates material variants sharing tariff lines; it does not represent different duty rates.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected pulley lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff records show no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls on these lines.

Confirm the commodity code using the drawing, material and condition at import. Do not select a specialised pulley line simply because its description mentions pulleys. See gearboxes and transmission parts for the wider heading. For bevel gearing, see our bevel gear sourcing guide.

Specify the tooth profile and shaft fit

Send a controlled drawing stating the belt tooth profile, pitch, tooth count, belt width, bore tolerance, keyway or clamping arrangement, hub dimensions and flange arrangement. Similar outside diameters do not establish belt compatibility. Identify whether the factory supplies a finished bore or a pilot bore for subsequent machining.

Specify material, surface treatment, tooth finish and permissible radial and axial runout. Give the factory the operating speed, torque, duty cycle and environment. Approve a sample with the actual belt and shaft, and retain the drawing revision and sample as production references.

For sales in Great Britain, conformity marking is only necessary where sector-specific regulations require it; not all products require marking. Check the applicable product category before asking for CE or UKCA paperwork. Businesses using the completed drive at work must manage its equipment risks, including preventing access to dangerous moving parts.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 300 aluminium timing belt pulleys under 8483 50 80 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Teeth: compare profile, pitch, tooth count and usable width with the approved drawing; check burrs and belt seating.

Bore and mounting: gauge bore and keyway dimensions, inspect clamping threads and trial-fit the intended shaft.

Runout and flanges: measure radial and axial runout against agreed tolerances; check flange attachment, alignment and belt clearance.

Material and packing: match material records to the batch, inspect coating and corrosion, and check tooth protection during quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A pulley can fit the shaft yet damage the belt because the tooth profile is wrong. Burrs cut belt edges, loose flanges let the belt wander, and an eccentric bore produces vibration and uneven tension. A catalogue photograph cannot establish these details.

Coating can change bore fit, and packing can leave teeth dented or steel surfaces rusty. Record defects on arrival before installation, separate affected stock and compare it with the approved drawing and sample. Agree correction evidence before accepting replacement parts.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on timing belt pulleys from China?

The selected pulley lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff records, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures. Confirm the code from material and product details.

Do timing belt pulleys need CE or UKCA marking?

Conformity marking depends on the applicable sector-specific regulations. Not all products require it. Check the product category and supplied assembly before requesting marking.

Can I order a pulley using only its outside diameter?

No. Specify the tooth profile, pitch, tooth count, belt width, bore fit, mounting arrangement and flanges. Trial-fit a sample with the intended belt and shaft.

What should I check when timing belt pulleys arrive?

Check tooth damage, burrs, bore and keyway fit, runout, flange security, corrosion and batch identification against the approved drawing and sample.
