Sourcing industrial push-buttons from China

Industrial push-button switches from China carry 0% UK duty on the relevant switch lines, with no anti-dumping duty shown. Electrical safety requirements depend on the rated voltage; mercury-added switches face import restrictions. Check the contact configuration and documentation for the exact model. Cambridge China Bridge sources industrial push-button switches.

Duty and classification for push-button switches

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 October 2026, heading 8536 covers switching and connecting apparatus for voltages not exceeding 1,000 V. Push-button switches not exceeding 60 V have the dedicated code 8536 50 11 00; other switches above 60 V fall under 8536 50 80 00. The accompanying rows cover snap-action mechanisms and associated switches, rather than interchangeable classifications for every push-button.

The selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no tariff suspension shown. The tariff attaches mercury import controls to the push-button and other-switch lines, and mercury export controls to all selected lines. Confirm with the relevant authority or your customs broker whether mercury-added products listed in the applicable mercury rules may be imported and whether an exemption applies. Obtain written confirmation that the switches contain no mercury.

Confirm the commodity code using the complete switch datasheet, contact rating and mechanism description. Do not classify an assembled control panel as a loose push-button switch. For the wider switching family, see rotary isolator switches.

Specify the operator and contact block together

Specify momentary or maintained action, normally open and normally closed contacts, panel cut-out, panel thickness, mounting method, terminal type and contact-block attachment. State the switching voltage, current and load type separately from any illumination supply. Include the legend, colour, operating force and return action in the approved sample specification.

For Great Britain, confirm with the relevant product-safety authority which technical documentation, declaration of conformity, UKCA or CE marking and importer identification are needed for switches within the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 voltage range. The range is 50 to 1,000 V AC or 75 to 1,500 V DC. In-scope equipment must have instructions in easily understandable English. Check hazardous-substance compliance for the contacts, plating and plastics, as described in the reference guide.

Match the documents to the exact operator, contact block and illuminated variant being ordered. Ask for model-specific test evidence rather than accepting a report for a visually similar switch. Our testing and certification service can help check that correspondence.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of industrial push-button switches for control-panel assembly under 8536 50 11 00, invoiced at £1,500 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,100. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,100, so it is £420. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: assemble samples in the intended panel and check the cut-out, anti-rotation feature, retaining nut, gasket and clearance behind the panel.

Contacts: check continuity against the agreed contact diagram before, during and after operation; confirm the contact block locks securely to the operator.

Action: check return, latching and release against the approved sample; look for sticking, loose caps and inconsistent illumination.

Identification: compare model markings, ratings, legends and supplied documents with the purchase specification; inspect terminals, seals and packaging for damage on arrival.

What goes wrong

A matching cap colour can hide a different contact arrangement or mechanism. Loose contact blocks, weak return springs and poorly fitted seals can leave an apparently correct switch unsuitable for the panel. Keep an approved assembled sample and reject substitutions unless the buyer has checked their fit and electrical performance.

An illuminated operator's supply rating can be mistaken for the contact switching rating. Documentation may also cover a different contact block or omit the illuminated variant. Resolve these differences before shipment, then repeat fit and function checks on arrival. Use quality inspection to plan checks against the agreed specification.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on industrial push-button switches from China?

The relevant switch lines carry 0% duty for China in the supplied tariff data, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty shown. Confirm the code from the switch rating and mechanism.

Which commodity code covers industrial push-button switches?

8536 50 11 00 covers push-button switches not exceeding 60 V. Other switches above 60 V fall under 8536 50 80 00. A snap-action mechanism may need a different classification.

Do industrial push-button switches need CE or UKCA marking?

For switches within the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations voltage range, confirm with the relevant product-safety authority which CE or UKCA marking and conformity documents are needed. Check the actual switching rating, rather than only the illumination voltage.

What should I specify when ordering replacement push-buttons?

Specify panel fit, momentary or maintained action, contact arrangement, terminal type, switching ratings and illumination supply. Check that the operator and contact block form the approved assembly.
