Sourcing rotary isolator switches from China

Rotary isolator switches from China carry 0% UK duty on the relevant switch lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Confirm with the relevant authority whether the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 apply to the mains-voltage models. Match the load rating and conformity documents to the supplied model. Zero duty on the relevant rotary switch lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 October 2026, rotary switches not exceeding 60 V under 8536 50 15 00 and other switches over 60 V under 8536 50 80 00 carried 0% duty from China. Neither line records anti-dumping or countervailing duty, or a tariff suspension. The table separates mounting formats within these same commodity lines.

Heading 8536 covers switching apparatus for voltages not exceeding 1,000 V. Both selected lines carry mercury import and export controls. Ask the relevant authority or your customs broker whether mercury-added product restrictions or exemptions apply to the switch. Ask for written confirmation that the switch contains no mercury, and have your customs broker confirm the tariff control requirements before shipment.

Confirm the commodity code using the switch function, voltage rating and supplied assembly. See the wider heading guide for circuit breakers, switches and connectors.

Specify the load, contacts and mounting

State whether the switch serves an alternating-current or direct-current circuit, the operating voltage, load type, current rating, switched poles and required contact sequence. Specify whether it must interrupt the working load or only provide isolation after another device opens the circuit. Ask for test reports covering the exact model and intended duty.

Agree the mounting cut-out, shaft length, handle position, terminal capacity, tightening instructions and locking arrangement. For enclosed switches, specify cable entries, seals, enclosure material and the required protection against water and dust. Approve an assembled sample with the intended cables fitted.

For models designed for 50 to 1,000 V alternating current, confirm with the relevant authority whether the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 apply and which technical documentation, declaration of conformity, UKCA or CE marking and importer identification are required. Confirm whether hazardous-substance restrictions also apply. Equipment within the safety Regulations must have instructions in easily understandable English. Use testing and certification to check the supplied evidence.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of enclosed rotary isolator switches, not a quotation under 8536 50 80 00, invoiced at £1,500 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,100. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,100, so it is £420. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match model, ratings, markings and conformity documents to the order and approved sample.

Contacts: check continuity and isolation at each handle position against the contact diagram; operate the mechanism repeatedly and check the locking function.

Terminals: check conductor fit, screw engagement and tightening against the agreed instructions; compare contact and terminal materials with the approved sample.

Enclosure: check seals, cable entries, cover fit and mounting dimensions on arrival; agree laboratory checks for claimed water and dust protection. See quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A current rating without the matching voltage and load type can lead to the wrong switch being ordered. A report for a similar-looking model may cover different contacts or an enclosure that was not supplied. Make the model designation and test configuration part of the purchase specification.

Check for stiff handles, incorrect contact sequences, loose terminal screws and trapped cover seals. Confirm that the handle position corresponds to the actual contact state and that the locking arrangement works on the assembled product. Keep the approved sample available for comparison.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on rotary isolator switches from China?

The relevant rotary switch lines carry 0% duty: 8536 50 15 00 up to 60 V and 8536 50 80 00 over 60 V. Neither records anti-dumping or countervailing duty in the supplied tariff snapshot.

Do rotary isolator switches need UKCA or CE marking?

For models within the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, confirm with the relevant authority which UKCA or CE marking, technical documentation and declaration of conformity are required. Match the documents to the supplied model.

Can I use the same rotary isolator for alternating and direct current?

Specify the circuit and load type. Obtain evidence for the intended voltage and switching duty rather than assuming an alternating-current rating also covers direct current.

What should I check when rotary isolators arrive?

Check model identity, contact sequence, handle and locking operation, terminals, mounting dimensions, seals and cable entries against the approved sample and order.
