Sourcing industrial metal detectors from China

The relevant heading 8543 lines carry 0% duty for parts and 2% for general apparatus from China, subject to classification. Machinery suppliers must provide equipment safe for use at work. Agree detection and rejection trials using your actual product. Cambridge China Bridge sources industrial metal detectors.

Duty on detectors and dedicated parts

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 October 2026, heading 8543 covers electrical machines and apparatus with individual functions not specified elsewhere in the chapter. The table shows detector configurations sharing the general apparatus line, plus a potential dedicated-parts line. These are classification candidates, rather than separate detector-specific tariff descriptions.

The general apparatus line carries 2% duty from China and the parts line 0%, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. The apparatus suspension describes specified telephone modules and high-frequency components, not industrial metal detectors. That line also flags torture-goods import prohibition and fluorinated greenhouse gas import control; confirm their application to your equipment with your customs broker. The parts line flags a torture-goods export restriction.

The official torture-goods notice describes a ban covering listed goods. Official fluorinated-gas guidance includes pre-charged equipment inside other products, so obtain the factory's gas-content declaration. Have your broker confirm the controls and commodity code from the complete configuration. See the industrial checkweighers guide for related equipment and the import duty and VAT guide for tax calculations.

Specify the aperture and product trial

Specify conveyor, gravity-feed or pipeline construction, usable aperture, product dimensions, throughput, temperature, moisture and packaging material. Agree separate detection targets for ferrous metal, non-ferrous metal and stainless steel. Ask the factory to demonstrate detection with your actual product at the agreed operating speed, including test pieces passing through different positions in the aperture.

Define the reject mechanism, reject confirmation, collection bin, alarm outputs and response to loss of air or power. For wet cleaning, agree enclosure sealing, belt removal and access to product-contact surfaces. Machinery manufacturers and suppliers must provide equipment safe for use at work. Under electromagnetic compatibility guidance, manufacturers must supply relevant instructions in English. Use testing and certification to review the proposed evidence.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2 conveyor metal detectors; values are illustrative, not a quote under 8543 70 90 99, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 2% is £252. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,852, so it is £2,570.40. Import taxes total £2,822.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £252 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Detection: repeat the agreed trials with actual product and identified test pieces; record settings, aperture position and results.

Rejection: check that contaminated packs enter the reject bin, rather than merely triggering an alarm; test consecutive rejects and fault responses.

Construction: compare aperture, belt, welds, seals and product-contact materials with the approved drawings; check for transit damage on arrival.

Documents: match the machine identity to reports and instructions; obtain wiring diagrams, spare-part references and saved settings. Plan these checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

An empty-aperture demonstration can hide poor performance with wet, salty or packaged product. Treat sensitivity quoted without product conditions as unproven. Metallic packaging, nearby vibration and changed line speed are reasons to repeat acceptance trials in the intended installation.

A detector can identify metal while the reject device misses the pack because timing or spacing is wrong. Agree acceptance for the complete detection-and-rejection sequence, retain the trial records and repeat the agreed checks after installation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on industrial metal detectors from China?

The general apparatus line 8543 70 90 99 carries 2%; dedicated parts under 8543 90 90 00 carry 0%, subject to classification. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded on these lines.

How do I compare metal-detector sensitivity?

Compare trials using the same product, packaging, aperture and speed. Agree separate targets for ferrous metal, non-ferrous metal and stainless steel, with test pieces passing through different aperture positions.

What should I ask a Chinese detector factory to demonstrate?

Ask for detection and physical rejection using your actual product, including consecutive contaminated packs, different test-piece positions and the agreed response to loss of air or power.

Do the tariff controls mean metal detectors are banned?

The tariff flags controls on the broad apparatus line. Have your customs broker check the actual equipment against the listed torture goods and fluorinated-gas requirements before shipment.
