Zero duty, with refrigerant controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8476 covers automatic goods-vending machines and their parts. All listed lines for goods from China carry 0% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures or suspensions recorded. For ice machines incorporating refrigeration, 8476 81 00 00 is the line to investigate.

The tariff attaches restrictions on entry into free circulation and fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls to refrigerated machine lines; the parts line also carries the gas control. New equipment must not use ozone-depleting substances. Where quota authorisations or delegations apply to equipment pre-charged with hydrofluorocarbons, insufficient cover prevents import into Great Britain. Give your customs broker the refrigerant and charge details and confirm the applicable declarations before shipment.

Confirm the commodity code from the complete machine's function, refrigeration and vending arrangement. The table includes configuration-dependent alternatives and parts, rather than interchangeable codes for an ice vending machine. For the wider heading, see vending machines; for ice-making equipment without a vending function, see commercial ice makers.

Specify how the machine makes and sells ice

Define whether the machine makes ice on site, dispenses loose ice or sells prefilled bags. Specify ice shape, output under the intended air and inlet-water conditions, storage capacity, portion weight, bag size, dispensing mechanism and access for cleaning. Agree the water connection, filtration, drainage, electrical supply, ventilation and indoor or outdoor location.

Confirm with the relevant authority the electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility requirements applicable to machines placed on the Great Britain market, including the UKCA or accepted CE marking route. Ask for the declaration of conformity and model-specific test reports. Agree the payment reader with your UK payment provider, including failed-vend refunds and operation during a connection loss.

Food hygiene rules require ice to be made, handled and stored under conditions that protect it from contamination. Specify a potable-water supply for ice intended for consumption, a covered storage bin, protected dispensing outlet and removable cleaning components. Ask the factory to demonstrate the cleaning process and identify replacement filters, seals and dispensing parts.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 30 compact refrigerated bagged-ice vending machines under 8476 81 00 00, invoiced at £66,000 free on board, with £7,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £73,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £73,000, so it is £14,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Ice delivery: weigh dispensed portions, test repeated purchases and check for bridging, blocked chutes, torn bags and incomplete delivery. Test empty-bin and failed-vend behaviour.

Water and hygiene: inspect the inlet, filters, bin, auger and outlet for accessible cleaning surfaces. Run the water and drainage circuits and check for leaks, retained water and contamination routes.

Refrigeration and documents: match the refrigerant, charge, model plate, declaration and test reports to the supplied machine. Check cooling, door seals, ventilation clearance and electrical earth.

Payments and arrival: test sterling payments and your provider's card reader. Inspect cabinet damage, locks, pipe connections and upright packing before installation. Use our quality inspection guide to prepare the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A machine can accept payment while ice bridges above the outlet or a bag catches in the delivery mechanism. Output claims can also disappoint when the site is warmer or the inlet water differs from the factory test conditions. Agree a witnessed operating test using the intended portion and bag before shipment.

Poor cleaning access, standing drain water and an exposed outlet create contamination risks. A changed refrigerant or payment module can also leave the documents or operating setup mismatched. Record the approved components and check the delivered machine against that specification.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on ice vending machines from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% for refrigerated goods-vending machines under 8476 81 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Is an ice maker classified as an ice vending machine?

Confirm whether the complete machine automatically sells ice or only makes it. Give your customs broker the operating description, payment arrangement and refrigeration specification before selecting the code.

Can I import a machine already charged with refrigerant?

Check the exact refrigerant and charge first. Where gas quota authorisations or delegations apply, you need sufficient cover. Ask your broker to confirm the tariff controls and declarations before shipment.

What should I test before accepting an ice vending machine?

Test portion weight, repeated dispensing, empty-bin behaviour, payments, cooling, drainage and cleaning access. Use the intended bags and operating conditions, and match the machine to its documents.
