Electrical safety and payments

Vending machines placed on the UK market must meet the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 and electromagnetic compatibility rules, with UKCA or accepted marking. The appliance safety standard is BS EN 60335-2-75 for commercial dispensing appliances and vending machines, used with the general part BS EN 60335-1.

Refrigerated machines use refrigerants that carry their own rules, often hydrocarbon R290, so check the refrigerant, charge and labelling. Card readers and telemetry must work with UK payment providers, so agree the payment hardware with your provider before production.

Specifying machines

Specify product types and number of selections, capacity, cooling or heating range, refrigerant, delivery system (spiral, lift or belt), payment devices (coin, note, card, contactless), telemetry and software, cabinet finish and branding, lock and security, voltage and plug, and the spare parts kit.

Worked duty example

An invented example rather than a quote: 30 refrigerated snack and drink vending machines, commodity code 8476 81 00 00, bought for £66,000 free on board, with £7,000 of freight and insurance, so £73,000 is the value customs works from. No duty is due on vending machines; import VAT at 20% of £73,000 is £14,600. If you are VAT-registered, that VAT is normally reclaimable. See calculating UK import duty and VAT for the method.

Inspection checklist

Safety: ask for test reports to BS EN 60335-1 and BS EN 60335-2-75 and EMC reports for the exact model, and check the refrigerant type, charge label and electrical earth on sampled machines.

Function: run sampled machines through vends of every selection, check temperature pull-down and holding, and test coin, note and card acceptance with UK currency and a test card from your provider.

Cabinet and packing: check door seals, locks, glass and branding, and check machines are strapped upright on pallets with corner protection.

What goes wrong

Vending machines fail on payments, cooling and delivery. Coin and note validators are not set for sterling, card readers are not certified by the UK provider, cooling cannot hold temperature in a warm site, spirals jam with UK product sizes, and machines arrive with damaged glass or doors.

Agree payment hardware with your provider, test vends with your products, and check packing before shipment. See our quality inspection guide.

Cambridge China Bridge sources vending machines and smart fridges for UK operators, and can place a first order to trial a model on site. See small orders.
