Sourcing cold drinks vending machines from China

Cold drinks vending machines from China carry 0% UK import duty across the relevant machine and parts lines, with no listed trade remedies. Refrigerated models need refrigerant-control checks and applicable energy labelling before sale in Great Britain; confirm electrical safety requirements with the relevant authority. Zero duty, with refrigerant controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 24 October 2026, heading 8476 covers automatic goods-vending machines and their parts. Beverage machines incorporating refrigeration fall within 8476 21 00 00; the other beverage line covers machines without heating or refrigeration. The table also includes the other refrigerated-machine line for combined models and the relevant parts line. See the wider vending-machine guide.

All selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspensions. The refrigerated-machine lines have a restriction on entry into free circulation concerning ozone-depleting substances and an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases. The parts line also has the fluorinated-gas control. New equipment must not use ozone-depleting substances, except recycled halons for critical uses.

Where quota authorisations or delegations are required, pre-charged equipment cannot be imported into Great Britain without enough cover. Give your broker the refrigerant identity, charge and machine specification to confirm applicability, exemptions and the declarations needed for both tariff controls. Confirm the commodity code before ordering, particularly for combined machines and separately shipped parts.

Specify the bottles, cooling and payment system

Send the factory the actual bottles and cans you intend to sell. Agree package dimensions, loaded capacity, selection layout and the delivery mechanism. Specify whether the machine must handle mixed container shapes, how it detects successful delivery and what happens when a paid vend fails.

Agree the cooling range, intended room conditions, ventilation clearance, refrigerant and charge, controller, door seals and access for cleaning. Confirm sterling acceptance and card-reader compatibility with your payment provider before production. Specify the plug, electrical supply, locks, replacement dispensing components and software access.

For machines supplied in Great Britain, confirm the applicable electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, conformity declaration and UKCA or CE marking requirements with the relevant authority. Also confirm which ecodesign and energy-labelling requirements apply to the refrigerated vending machine. Request the exact model's safety reports, energy label, product information sheet and supporting technical documentation.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 30 refrigerated cold drinks vending machines under 8476 21 00 00, invoiced at £66,000 free on board, with £7,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £73,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £73,000, so it is £14,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Delivery: test every selection with your intended bottles and cans, including nearly empty columns; check jams, double delivery, damaged containers and failed-vend handling.

Cooling: record pull-down and holding temperature with a loaded cabinet under the agreed room conditions; inspect door seals, ventilation and the refrigerant nameplate.

Payments and documents: test sterling and your provider's test card; match the model, conformity declaration, safety reports, energy label and product information sheet.

Arrival: inspect glass, hinges, locks, cabinet dents and pallet damage before installation; photograph defects and repeat dispensing and cooling checks. Use the inspection guide to plan checks before shipment.

What goes wrong

A factory demonstration with its own cans can hide problems with your bottles. Narrow necks snag, soft containers deform and a drop mechanism can damage drinks. Cooling also suffers when the cabinet is tightly enclosed or its seals are damaged. Approve the machine using your intended products and installation conditions.

Payment hardware may arrive configured for another currency or incompatible with your provider. Documents may describe a different controller or refrigeration configuration. Freeze the approved configuration in the order and compare it with the shipped machines before accepting substitutions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on cold drinks vending machines from China?

The relevant machine and parts lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff reading. Refrigerated beverage-vending machines are listed under 8476 21 00 00, with no listed trade remedy.

Can I import a cold drinks vending machine with refrigerant already inside?

Check the refrigerant and tariff controls first. Where quota authorisations or delegations are required, pre-charged equipment cannot enter Great Britain without enough cover. Ask your broker to confirm applicability and exemptions.

Does a refrigerated drinks vending machine need an energy label?

Confirm with the relevant authority which energy-labelling rules apply to the refrigerated vending machine. Ask for the exact model's label, product information sheet and supporting technical documentation, alongside its ecodesign evidence.

Will a Chinese drinks vending machine accept UK cards and coins?

Only if its payment equipment is configured for sterling and compatible with your payment provider. Agree the hardware before production and test it with UK currency and your provider's test card.
