Coffee vending machine duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 24 October 2026, heading 8476 covers automatic goods-vending machines. Coffee vending machines incorporating heating or refrigeration fall under 8476 21 00 00. Other beverage-vending machines fall under 8476 29 00 00. The table separates bean-to-cup and instant-coffee models under the same heated-machine code.

The selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duties or suspensions. The heated or refrigerated line has an ozone-depleting-substance restriction and fluorinated greenhouse gas import control; the parts line also has the latter control. New equipment must not use ozone-depleting substances, apart from the stated critical-use halon exception. Refrigerated equipment must comply with applicable product bans. Ask your customs broker to confirm the declarations and requirements for the actual refrigerant.

Confirm the commodity code from the vending function, heating or cooling configuration and any separately shipped parts. Coffee appliances that do not sell drinks automatically may belong elsewhere. For the wider heading, see snack vending machines.

Specify the coffee system and cleaning access

Choose bean-to-cup or instant coffee, then agree recipes, cup sizes, ingredient hoppers, grinder and brewer access, water tank or mains connection, filtration, drainage and waste collection. Specify whether customers supply a cup or the machine dispenses one. Agree how operators remove and clean mixers, hoses, the brewer and drip tray.

For sale in Great Britain, confirm the applicable electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, UKCA or accepted CE marking and declaration of conformity requirements with the relevant authority. Request reports matching the supplied model. Specify UK payment-provider compatibility, sterling coin settings, software access and replacement pumps, seals and dispensing components. Ask for material specifications and suitability evidence for parts touching water, coffee or milk.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative pilot batch of heated coffee vending machines under 8476 21 00 00, invoiced at £28,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £32,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £32,000, so it is £6,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Brewing: run every agreed recipe using your ingredients and cups; check drink volume, temperature, mixing, cup release and repeat dispensing.

Water and cleaning: check connections for leaks, drainage, waste-container access and removal of food-contact components; demonstrate the cleaning routine.

Payments and documents: test sterling and the agreed card reader, including failed vends and refunds; match the rating plate, marking, declaration and reports to the delivered model.

Arrival condition: inspect doors, locks, screens, hoppers and internal mountings for transport damage; check packing and supplied spares. Use the inspection guide to plan checks.

What goes wrong

Typical faults to test for include bridging powder, blocked mixers, inconsistent grinding, leaking hoses, missed cup drops and payment taken without a drink. A demonstration using the supplier's ingredients may conceal problems with your coffee, milk powder or cups. Agree acceptance checks using your intended consumables.

Cleaning access and software support can become problems after installation. Confirm that operators can remove wet components and that you can change recipes and payment settings. For refrigerated milk configurations, obtain the refrigerant specification before ordering and have your broker confirm the attached import controls.
