Sourcing fruit grading machines from China
Fruit grading machines and their parts from China carry 0% UK duty, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Machinery conformity documents matter alongside grading performance: the technical file must be compiled and available on request. Cambridge China Bridge sources fruit grading machines.

Fruit grading machines and parts: zero duty
Heading 8433 includes machines for cleaning, sorting or grading fruit and other agricultural produce, excluding machinery of heading 8437. The table distinguishes grading methods sharing the same machine code; it does not represent separate tariff subdivisions. For the wider heading, see our potato harvesters guide. For vineyard harvesting equipment, see sourcing grape harvesting machines.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, fruit grading machines under 8433 60 00 00 and parts under 8433 90 00 00 carried 0% duty for goods from China. Neither line lists anti-dumping or countervailing duty, a suspension or an import control. Import VAT is normally 20%.
Confirm the commodity code using the machine's function, drawings and supplied configuration. Describe separately supplied parts individually rather than assuming every replacement component belongs under the machinery parts code.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fruit grading machines using size | 8433 60 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Parts for fruit grading machines | 8433 90 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the fruit and the grading method
Name the fruit varieties, size range, ripeness and surface condition. Specify whether grading uses diameter, weight, colour or visible defects, and define the accepted grade boundaries and sorting errors. Agree throughput using representative fruit, including irregular shapes, rather than relying on an empty-machine demonstration.
Specify feed arrangements, gentle transfer points, outlet layout, electrical supply, cleaning access and replacement rollers or cups. For optical systems, agree lighting, camera settings, saved recipes and access to software. Ask for the exact configuration's declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking, English manual and electrical drawings. Machinery conformity requires a technical file compiled and available on request.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: One compact fruit grading machine, illustrative only under 8433 60 00 00, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Grading: run a mixed batch of agreed fruit, check each outlet against the grade boundaries and repeat after changing the feed rate.
Fruit handling: inspect for bruising, skin damage and trapped fruit at transfers, rollers, cups and discharge points.
Cleaning: check access beneath belts and rollers, removal of fruit residues, drainage where washing is specified and reassembly after cleaning.
Documents and safety: match the model and supplied configuration to the declaration and manual; test guards, interlocks and emergency stops through an agreed safe procedure. Keep essential health and safety instructions in printed form.

What goes wrong
A grader can separate firm, regular samples accurately yet misgrade softer or uneven fruit. Excessive feed can cause overlapping fruit, inaccurate weighing and missed optical defects. Hard transfers can bruise fruit even when the sorting result looks correct. Record both grade accuracy and fruit condition during acceptance.
Cleaning can become difficult when residues collect inside hollow rollers or beneath inaccessible belts. Replacement cups may differ from the approved sample, and changed lighting can alter optical results. Agree component specifications and repeat the fruit trial after substitutions. Arrange inspection against the written acceptance brief.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on fruit grading machines from China?
The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty for fruit grading machines under 8433 60 00 00 and parts under 8433 90 00 00, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.
Can a fruit grader sort by colour and weight?
Specify both functions explicitly. Ask for a trial using your fruit and grade boundaries, then check each outlet. A weight grader does not automatically include optical sorting.
What documents should I ask the factory for?
Ask for the exact configuration's declaration of conformity, English manual, electrical drawings and nameplate details. Check CE or UKCA marking and arrangements for making the technical file available.
How do I check whether the machine bruises fruit?
Run representative fruit through the complete machine at the agreed feed rate. Inspect fruit before and after grading, including transfer and discharge points, and agree how delayed bruising will be assessed.
