Sourcing flux-cored brazing wire from China

Flux-cored brazing wire of base metal from China carries 0% UK duty under 8311 30 00 00. Specify the alloy and flux together, and obtain safety information before workplace trials. Hazardous chemicals supplied for use at work need safety data sheets. Cambridge China Bridge sources flux-cored brazing wire.

UK duty on flux-cored brazing wire

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 November 2026, heading 8311 covers base-metal or metal-carbide products coated or cored with flux for joining or metal deposition, alongside agglomerated metal-powder wire and rods for spraying. Base-metal flux-cored brazing wire falls within the line for coated rods and cored wire used for soldering, brazing or flame welding.

The relevant line, 8311 30 00 00, carries 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for this line. This tariff position does not establish the chemical safety of a particular alloy or flux.

Confirm the commodity code using the metal composition, flux-core construction and intended joining process. Do not use the electric arc-welding wire line simply because the supplier calls the product cored wire. For related products within the heading, see our silver brazing rods guide.

Specify the alloy and flux together

State the metals being joined, joint design, heating method and intended service conditions. Specify filler-alloy composition, melting range, wire diameter and tolerance, flux formulation and content, spool format or cut lengths, net weight and moisture-resistant packaging. Ask the factory to describe residue removal and storage conditions.

Request batch composition results and a sample for a joint trial using your actual materials. Obtain safety information covering both alloy and flux. Where the supplied chemical is hazardous and intended for use at work, safety data sheets are required. A safety data sheet is not a workplace risk assessment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of flux-cored brazing wire for a workshop under 8311 30 00 00, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £810 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,810. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,810, so it is £562. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match alloy and flux descriptions, batch identifiers and composition results to the purchase specification.

Wire and winding: measure diameter, inspect for splits, kinks and exposed or leaking flux, and check that spooled wire unwinds without tangling.

Packing: check moisture barriers, seals, corrosion, net weight and batch identification before releasing stock.

Joint trial: braze sampled wire on the intended metals and joint geometry; check wetting, joint filling, visible voids and residue removal against the agreed sample.

What goes wrong

A filler alloy may suit the base metals while its flux does not suit the heating process. Moisture damage, uneven flux filling or an unapproved formulation change can produce inconsistent joint filling and residues that are difficult to remove. Poor winding interrupts feeding even when the alloy is correct.

Agree alloy and flux change approval in writing, retain an accepted sample and compare incoming batches with it. Keep suspect batches separate until composition and joint trials resolve the discrepancy. Use our quality inspection guide to define the checks before shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on flux-cored brazing wire from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% under 8311 30 00 00, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Is flux-cored brazing wire classified as arc-welding wire?

Base-metal cored wire for brazing is covered by 8311 30 00 00. Specify the intended joining process when confirming the code.

Do I need a safety data sheet for brazing wire?

Obtain safety information for the alloy and flux. Safety data sheets are required where the supplied chemical is hazardous and intended for use at work; they do not replace a risk assessment.

What should I test before ordering brazing wire?

Trial the proposed alloy and flux on your actual base metals and joint geometry. Check wetting, joint filling and residue removal, then agree batch composition evidence and packaging.
