Sourcing nickel flux-cored wire from China

Nickel-alloy flux-cored welding wire from China carries 0% UK duty under the electric arc-welding cored-wire line, with no trade remedies recorded. Employers must control health risks from welding fume. Match the deposited alloy and batch evidence to the intended weld. Cambridge China Bridge sources nickel-alloy flux-cored welding wire.

Duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8311 covers flux-coated or flux-cored base-metal welding consumables and related products. Nickel-alloy flux-cored wire for electric arc welding falls within the cored-wire description under 8311 20 00 00.

The supplied record shows 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control recorded for this line. The table shows application variants sharing this code, rather than separate tariff lines.

Send the composition, construction and welding-process description to your customs broker to confirm the commodity code. Solid wire without flux is classified by its metal as wire. For related coverage within the heading, see the stainless steel flux-cored welding wire guide.

Specify the deposited nickel alloy

State the base metals, joint or overlay application, deposited weld-metal composition, required classification and mechanical properties. Specify wire diameter, spool weight and dimensions, winding, shielding gas, polarity and welding positions. Agree which batch test results the factory will supply and approve a trial weld using the intended materials and process.

Request a safety data sheet for the exact consumable and agree moisture-resistant packaging and storage instructions. Employers must control health risks from welding fume. HSE identifies nickel in welding fume as a possible cause of occupational asthma. A safety data sheet does not replace the workplace assessment of risks from hazardous substances.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 20 spools of nickel-alloy flux-cored welding wire; illustrative order, FOB value and freight under 8311 20 00 00, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,600, so it is £520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match spool labels, alloy designation, classification and batch numbers to the order and batch certificates; compare deposited-metal chemistry with the agreed specification.

Feed: measure wire diameter and spool dimensions; check winding, loose turns, surface contamination and feeding through the intended equipment.

Packing: check moisture barriers, seals and spool protection; look for wet cartons, corrosion and damaged wire before releasing stock.

Weld: sample each received batch using the agreed gas and settings; check arc behaviour, slag removal, porosity and cracking, then compare agreed test results. Arrange a shipment inspection.

What goes wrong

An invoice saying only nickel-alloy wire leaves the deposited alloy, flux system and intended application unclear. A certificate for another batch or a different consumable does not establish that the supplied wire meets your specification. Check batch identity before accepting chemistry or mechanical-property results.

Poor winding can interrupt feeding, while damaged moisture barriers can leave wire unsuitable for the approved welding procedure. Quarantine suspect spools and compare a production sample with the approved trial weld before releasing the batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on nickel-alloy flux-cored welding wire from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% under 8311 20 00 00 for electric arc-welding cored wire, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded.

Is solid nickel-alloy welding wire covered by this code?

Solid wire without flux is classified by its metal as wire. Confirm the construction and welding process before using the cored-wire code.

What should a nickel-alloy wire batch certificate show?

Ask for the exact consumable designation, batch identity, deposited-metal chemistry and agreed mechanical test results. Match these to the spool labels and purchase specification.

Can a safety data sheet replace a welding risk assessment?

No. HSE says a safety data sheet does not substitute for a workplace assessment of risks from hazardous substances. Employers must control health risks from welding fume.
