Sourcing silver brazing rods from China

Flux-coated silver brazing rods within heading 8311 carry 0% UK duty from China, with no duty variation in the supplied tariff lines. For ordinary commercial brazing, cadmium in the filler must stay below the restricted concentration. Check alloy composition and flux condition. Cambridge China Bridge sources flux-coated silver brazing rods.

Duty on flux-coated silver brazing rods

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 11 October 2026, heading 8311 covers base-metal or metal-carbide consumables coated or cored with flux. Coated base-metal rods for soldering, brazing or flame welding fall within 8311 30 00 00. The table shows packaging variants under that same line, rather than separate tariff classifications.

The supplied tariff facts show 0% duty from China throughout this heading, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. This does not replace checks on chemical restrictions. Ordinary commercial brazing fillers must not contain cadmium at a concentration equal to or greater than 0,01 % by weight.

Give your broker the complete alloy composition, flux coating details and intended joining process to confirm the commodity code. Do not classify by the words 'silver solder' alone. See the wider welding consumables guide for other products within this heading.

Specify the alloy and flux together

Specify the silver content and full alloy composition, rod diameter and length, flux formulation, coating thickness, working temperature range and intended parent metals. Agree the joint clearance and heating method for sample trials. Request batch-linked composition results, including cadmium, rather than accepting a catalogue description.

Agree moisture-resistant packaging and protection against coating damage. Request safety data sheets covering the alloy and flux. A safety data sheet is required where a chemical is hazardous and supplied for workplace use; it does not replace the employer's risk assessment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative distributor order of cartons of flux-coated silver brazing rods under 8311 30 00 00, invoiced at £24,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £26,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £26,000, so it is £5,200. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Composition: match pack batch numbers to alloy test results and check the reported silver and cadmium content against the agreed specification.

Coating: check sampled rods for cracks, bare patches, loose flux and uneven coverage, including damage inside protective tubes.

Trial joint: use the intended parent metals and heating method; check wetting, filler flow, joint fill and residue removal against the approved sample.

Packing: check seals, moisture protection, rod straightness and readable batch labels. Record defects using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A familiar coating colour can hide a different alloy or flux formulation. Damaged or damp coatings can make trial joints inconsistent, while a substitute alloy may need different heating conditions. Compare batch evidence and trial joints before releasing stock.

A 'cadmium-free' label is not a substitute for composition evidence. Ask for results linked to the supplied batch and agree how failed material will be isolated. Keep replacement alloy and flux changes subject to sample approval.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on flux-coated silver brazing rods from China?

The supplied tariff facts show 0% duty for qualifying coated base-metal brazing rods under 8311 30 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Can I buy cadmium-containing silver brazing rods?

For ordinary commercial brazing, cadmium must not be used in fillers at a concentration equal to or greater than 0,01 % by weight. Specify cadmium-free material and request batch composition results.

Does the flux coating colour identify the alloy?

Do not use colour as the acceptance criterion. Match the declared alloy composition, batch results and flux formulation to your purchase specification.

How should I check a sample before ordering?

Make trial joints with your intended parent metals, joint clearance and heating method. Check filler flow, joint fill, coating condition and residue removal.
