Sourcing aluminium welding rods from China

Flux-coated aluminium welding rods from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant tariff lines, with no recorded trade remedies. Classify by the actual joining process, and control welding fume when using them at work. Check alloy identity, coating condition and trial joints. Cambridge China Bridge sources flux-coated aluminium welding rods.

Duty on flux-coated aluminium rods

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8311 covers base-metal consumables coated or cored with flux for soldering, brazing, welding or metal deposition. Flux-coated aluminium arc electrodes fall under 8311 10 00 00; coated rods for soldering, brazing or flame welding fall under 8311 30 00 00. The table separates uses sharing the same tariff code.

Both relevant lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls. These are the recorded tariff measures, rather than a substitute for checking the product's composition and intended use.

Confirm the commodity code using the coating, alloy and joining process, rather than the supplier's description alone. For the wider heading, see welding electrodes and cored wire.

Specify the alloy and joining process

State whether the rods are for electric arc welding, flame welding, brazing or soldering. Specify the filler alloy, parent aluminium alloy, rod diameter and length, coating composition, joint design and intended service. Ask for batch composition certificates, storage instructions and the supplier's procedure for surface preparation and flux-residue removal.

Approve trial joints on your own aluminium material before accepting production. Agree the required joint appearance, strength and leak performance where relevant. Request safety information for the rod and coating. Hazardous chemicals supplied for workplace use require safety data sheets; establish whether that requirement applies to the supplied formulation. Employers must control health risks from welding fume.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 2,000 kg of flux-coated aluminium rods for flame welding under 8311 30 00 00, invoiced at £24,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £26,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £26,000, so it is £5,200. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match pack descriptions and batch identifiers to the agreed alloy and batch certificates; investigate any change in composition.

Dimensions and coating: check rod diameter, length and straightness against the order, and look for cracked, chipped or uneven flux coating.

Packing: inspect seals and moisture barriers, check for damp packs or loose coating powder, and compare storage instructions with the approved sample.

Trial joints: sample incoming batches on the intended parent alloy; check wetting, joint fill, visible porosity and residue removal against the approved trial. Plan checks through the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A product sold as an aluminium welding rod may be intended for brazing or soldering instead of the buyer's welding process. An attractive demonstration does not establish suitability for the intended joint. Confirm the filler composition and process, then trial the actual parent material and joint geometry.

Damaged or damp coating, inconsistent filler composition and unsuitable surface preparation can produce inconsistent joints. Hold suspect batches apart, retain pack and certificate details, and compare failures with the approved sample before releasing stock.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on flux-coated aluminium welding rods from China?

The relevant arc-electrode and coated flame-welding, brazing or soldering rod lines carry 0% duty. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Which commodity code applies to coated aluminium rods?

8311 10 00 00 covers coated electrodes for electric arc welding. 8311 30 00 00 covers coated rods for soldering, brazing or flame welding. Confirm the actual process.

What should I ask the Chinese factory to provide?

Ask for filler and coating composition, batch certificates, dimensions, storage and safety information, and a joining procedure. Approve trials on your intended aluminium alloy.

How do I check the rods when they arrive?

Match batch certificates and labels, inspect dimensions and coating, check packs for moisture, and make trial joints from incoming batches using the approved procedure.
