UK duty on flux coated copper brazing rods

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8311 covers base-metal products coated or cored with flux for soldering, brazing, welding or metal deposition. Flux coated copper rods for flame brazing fall within the description of 8311 30 00 00. Only this supplied tariff line is relevant to the product covered here.

The supplied tariff record gives 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. This tariff snapshot does not establish compliance with chemical supply rules.

Confirm the commodity code using the filler composition, flux coating and joining process. Do not classify an uncoated rod solely from this guide. For the wider heading, see our flux coated silver brazing rods guide.

Specify the copper filler and flux together

State whether the filler is copper or a copper alloy, its agreed composition, rod diameter and length, and the metals being joined. Specify the supplier's melting range, flux working range, coating coverage and residue removal instructions. Ask for batch composition records and approve trial joints using your actual parent metals and joint preparation.

Request a current safety data sheet covering the supplied formulation. Where the product is supplied as substances or mixtures, chemical labelling and packaging duties apply before sale in Great Britain. Classification and labelling must be undertaken by someone scientifically competent. A safety data sheet helps inform your workplace assessment but does not replace it.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Trial stock of sealed packs of flux coated copper brazing rods, illustrative under 8311 30 00 00, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £810 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,810. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,810, so it is £562. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match pack descriptions, alloy composition records and batch references to the purchase specification.

Dimensions: measure the metal core diameter separately from the coating, check rod length and straightness, and verify pack contents against the order.

Coating and packing: check for bare patches, cracked or detached flux, loose powder and damp packaging. Compare coating coverage with the approved sample.

Trial joints: check wetting, filler flow, joint fill and residue removal on the agreed parent metals. Use the joint tests agreed with your fabricator. See quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A description such as 'copper brazing rod' can hide a different filler alloy or a flux unsuited to the parent metals. The result can be poor wetting or incomplete joint fill. Coating colour alone does not establish composition; match batch records to a practical joint trial.

Cracked coatings, moisture damage and loose flux can make rods inconsistent in use. Agree packaging and rejection criteria before production, inspect arrival stock before mixing batches, and retain labelled samples for comparison.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on flux coated copper brazing rods from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% for 8311 30 00 00, read on 1 October 2026, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Are bare copper brazing rods covered by this code?

This line describes coated rods and cored wire for soldering, brazing or flame welding. Confirm an uncoated rod separately using its composition and construction.

What should I ask the Chinese factory to specify?

Ask for filler composition, core diameter, length, melting range, flux working range, compatible parent metals, batch records and residue removal instructions.

Does a safety data sheet replace a brazing risk assessment?

No. HSE says a safety data sheet is not a risk assessment. Use its information to help assess the actual brazing task.
