Sourcing engine oil sumps from China

Engine oil sumps from China normally carry 2% UK duty for both petrol and diesel applications. The main selling rule is that products supplied on the Great Britain market must be safe. Specify the engine application, sealing geometry and leak test before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources engine oil sumps.

Oil sump classification and UK duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8409 covers parts suitable for use solely or principally with engines of heading 8407 or 8408. Replacement oil sumps for spark-ignition engines are candidates for 8409 91 00 90; diesel engine sumps are candidates for 8409 99 00 90. The table repeats these codes for different construction types, rather than implying separate material-based tariff lines.

Both candidate lines carry 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no attached import controls on these lines. It records conditional 0% suspensions for specifically described other components, not a general exemption for oil sumps. Do not assume that a suspension applies to your sump.

Confirm the engine type, sole or principal use and supplied assembly with your broker using the commodity-code guide. Separately supplied seals and fasteners may classify elsewhere. See the engine cylinder-block guide for the wider heading. For another engine component, see sourcing engine valve seat inserts.

Engine fit, sump depth and sealing geometry

Order against the original equipment part number, engine application and a controlled drawing or reference sample. Specify cast alloy or pressed steel, flange flatness, bolt-hole positions, sump depth, oil capacity, pickup clearance and clearance to the vehicle crossmember. Identify any baffles, oil-level sensor opening, drain plug, gasket or sealant interface included in the supply.

Agree the leak-test method and acceptance criteria with the factory. Check the first sample on the intended engine assembly, including the oil pickup and drain-plug access. For Great Britain sales, the general product safety rules aim to ensure that only safe products are supplied. Keep fitment and test records with the batch.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative mixed batch of replacement diesel engine oil sumps under 8409 99 00 90, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £1,160 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,160. Duty at 2% is £83.20. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,243.20, so it is £848.64. Import taxes total £931.84; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £83.20 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit and sealing: measure flange flatness, hole positions, sump depth and sensor mounting details against the approved drawing. Compare the delivered part number with the approved sample.

Leaks and construction: inspect castings for cracks and porosity, and pressed shells for split seams, dents and incomplete welds. Review the agreed leak-test records and repeat the agreed checks at inspection.

Drain and cleanliness: check thread form, plug seating and washer fit. Inspect inside for swarf, casting sand, weld debris and loose coating, including behind baffles.

Packing and traceability: check batch identification, corrosion protection and protection around the flange and drain boss. On arrival, examine cartons and sumps for impact damage before releasing stock.

What goes wrong

A similar-looking sump can bolt on yet foul the oil pickup or crossmember. A distorted flange leaks even with a new gasket; porous castings and poorly welded seams can also leak. Wrong drain threads, loose baffles and internal debris create further problems. Approve fit and sealing on a sample before releasing the production batch.

Transport damage can bend the flange or crack a drain boss without crushing the whole carton. Segregate damaged or leaking stock, record the affected batch and compare it with the approved sample. Keep vehicle-maker branding off the sump and packaging unless authorised.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on engine oil sumps from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 2% on both relevant general petrol and diesel engine-part lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the code for the actual sump.

Which commodity code covers an engine oil sump?

Candidates are 8409 91 00 90 for spark-ignition engine sumps and 8409 99 00 90 for diesel engine sumps. Confirm engine application and the supplied assembly with your broker.

What should I send a Chinese oil sump factory?

Send the original equipment part number, engine application, drawing and reference sample. Define material, sealing geometry, pickup clearance, drain threads and included fittings.

How do I check replacement oil sump quality?

Check sample fit, flange flatness, drain threads, internal cleanliness and the agreed leak test. Inspect castings or welds and check for transport damage before releasing stock.
