Sourcing engine piston rings from China

Engine piston rings from China carry 0% to 2% UK duty: ordinary petrol and diesel rings pay 2%, while aircraft-engine lines carry 0%. Classification follows the intended engine, and importers of consumer products are responsible for their safety. Cambridge China Bridge sources engine piston rings.

Duty depends on the intended engine

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8409 covers parts suitable solely or principally for the engines of headings 8407 or 8408. Ordinary petrol-engine piston rings fall within the other spark-ignition parts line; diesel rings fall within the other engine-parts line. The aircraft rows are specialist alternatives, rather than codes for automotive rings.

The ordinary petrol and diesel lines carry 2% duty on goods from China; aircraft-engine lines carry 0%. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no attached import controls for these rows. Suspensions on the ordinary engine-parts lines describe specific intake, cover, duct or hose components, rather than piston rings.

Confirm the commodity code against the engine application and part drawing before shipment. For the wider piston and associated-parts family, see engine piston assemblies. For another engine component, see sourcing engine valve seat inserts.

Specify the bore, groove and ring profile

Provide the engine identification, original part number, cylinder bore and piston-groove drawing. State whether the order is for compression rings, oil-control rings or complete matched sets. Specify axial width, radial thickness, end-gap acceptance, ring-face profile, material, coating and tangential force. Identify standard or oversize applications explicitly.

Approve a measured sample set before production and agree how the factory will measure each characteristic. Keep installation orientation and set contents on the packing specification. For rings intended or reasonably likely to be used by consumers in Great Britain, general product safety rules apply; businesses importing or selling consumer products are responsible for their safety.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative pilot batch of diesel engine piston-ring sets for a repair business under 8409 99 00 90, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £1,160 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,160. Duty at 2% is £83.20. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,243.20, so it is £848.64. Import taxes total £931.84; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £83.20 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: check axial width, radial thickness and end gap in the agreed bore gauge against the approved drawing.

Material and force: match material and coating records to the batch, and check dimensions and tangential force against the agreed ISO 6621 ring specification.

Surface: inspect ring faces and edges for chips, burrs, corrosion and coating damage; compare the profile and orientation marks with the approved sample.

Sets and packing: verify ring types, engine references and batch identification on each pack. On arrival, check for damp packaging and rust before releasing stock. Arrange quality inspection against the same acceptance criteria.

What goes wrong

A matching catalogue reference can conceal a different groove width, ring profile or oversize bore application. Rings may fit into the piston yet have an unsuitable end gap or tangential force. Mixed compression and oil-control components can also turn a correctly labelled box into an unusable set.

Coating damage, brittle edges and corrosion can be missed when inspection only counts sealed packs. Open representative sets, measure against the agreed drawing and retain batch records. Quarantine mismatched or damaged arrivals while the supplier investigates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on piston rings from China?

Ordinary petrol and diesel engine piston rings carry 2% duty. Aircraft-engine lines carry 0%. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty for these lines.

Can I order piston rings by engine model alone?

Provide the original part number and drawing as well. Confirm bore size, groove dimensions, ring profile, material, coating and the contents of each set.

What should I measure on a piston-ring sample?

Check axial width, radial thickness, end gap in the agreed bore gauge and tangential force. Compare the ring-face profile and installation orientation with the approved drawing.

Do engine-parts duty suspensions cover piston rings?

The suspensions listed on the ordinary engine-parts lines describe other components, rather than piston rings. Budget for 2% duty on ordinary petrol and diesel rings.
