2% duty on enamelled copper winding wire

Heading 8544 covers insulated electrical conductors, including enamelled wire. Enamelled or lacquered copper winding wire falls under 8544 11 10 00. The table shows purchasing variants sharing this tariff line, rather than separate commodity codes.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, the supplied tariff data records 2% duty for this line on goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Confirm the commodity code using the conductor material, coating description and intended winding use. For other insulated conductors and assemblies, see electrical cable and wire harnesses.

Specify the copper, enamel and winding process

State whether the conductor is round or rectangular. Specify bare copper dimensions and tolerances separately from finished coated dimensions, together with enamel chemistry, coating build, thermal performance, electrical resistance and spool format. For self-bonding wire, agree the activation process; for solderable wire, agree the termination process and acceptance test.

Approve a sample on your winding machine using the intended tension, bend geometry, impregnation and termination process. Ask for batch-linked results for dimensions, resistance, insulation breakdown and enamel adhesion. Retain an approved sample and agree which changes need your approval.

Government guidance says products imported into Great Britain for further manufacture or processing are not considered placed on the market. Establish how the wire will be supplied and used before deciding the conformity route. Confirm with the relevant authority or your customs broker whether the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 apply to the actual product.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: An illustrative batch of spools of enamelled copper winding wire for a motor repair business under 8544 11 10 00, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £1,100 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £17,100. Duty at 2% is £342. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £17,442, so it is £3,488.40. Import taxes total £3,830.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £342 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Conductor: check bare dimensions after removing the enamel, verify copper material and compare measured resistance with the agreed specification.

Enamel: check finished dimensions, surface damage, pinholes and batch test results for insulation breakdown and adhesion.

Unwinding: trial the spool on your equipment and check crossed turns, snags, flange damage and any joints against the purchase specification.

Traceability: match spool labels, net wire weight, coating designation and batch references to the packing list and test records. Plan quality inspection against these acceptance criteria.

What goes wrong

Matching finished diameter can hide undersized copper beneath a thicker coating. Copper-clad aluminium substitution is another risk. Check conductor dimensions and material independently of the enamel, rather than accepting spool weight or appearance alone.

Enamel that looks intact on the spool may crack during winding or fail after your heat or impregnation process. A solderable coating may also behave differently under your termination conditions. Quarantine suspect batches on arrival and compare winding trials with the approved sample before releasing them to production.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on enamelled copper winding wire from China?

The supplied tariff data gives 2% for 8544 11 10 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension.

Do different enamel coatings change the commodity code?

The supplied line covers lacquered or enamelled copper winding wire. Confirm the material and product description before using 8544 11 10 00.

Does enamelled winding wire automatically need CE or UKCA marking?

Establish the product's scope and supply route first. Government guidance says products imported for further manufacture or processing are not considered placed on the market.

How do I check enamelled copper wire before using it?

Measure bare and coated dimensions, verify copper and resistance, inspect enamel integrity and trial unwinding, winding and termination against the approved sample.
