Sourcing iron dismantling joints from China

Ductile iron dismantling joints from China carry 0% UK duty on the relevant listed lines, with no listed trade remedies. Specify flange drilling, adjustment travel and restraint; for drinking-water use, confirm the applicable water fittings requirements with the local water company. Cambridge China Bridge sources ductile iron dismantling joints.

Zero duty on the listed lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 7307 covers iron or steel tube and pipe fittings. The listed lines relevant to ductile iron dismantling joints and separately supplied mating flanges carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension, steel trade measure or attached import control on these lines.

For an unthreaded spheroidal graphite cast iron fitting, examine 7307 19 10 40 against the actual joint. Threaded fittings and separately supplied steel or stainless steel flanges have different descriptions, shown in the table. Tie-rod threads alone should not determine the fitting description. Confirm the commodity code using drawings, materials and connection details. See the steel pipe repair couplings guide for the wider heading.

Confirm with HMRC or your customs broker whether these goods fall within the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism and when any obligations would apply. Ask them to confirm how covered imports across the business affect registration, rather than assessing this order alone. Ask the factory for emissions information and check the registration conditions in the UK carbon border adjustment guide.

Flange fit, adjustment travel and restraint

Specify the ductile iron grade, bore, flange drilling and face type, installed length, adjustment range, pressure and temperature ratings, and service fluid. Include seal material, coating, fastener material and the complete tie-rod arrangement. Agree whether the joint transfers axial thrust and how the installation provides restraint. Ask for an assembly drawing showing clearance for valve removal and access to nuts.

For drinking-water fittings on water supplied by a water undertaker, confirm the applicable quality, standard and suitability requirements with the local water company. Check evidence for the exact joint, coating and seal combination; merchants may also request third-party approval. Confirm the installation requirements with the local water company.

For pressure-equipment applications, ask a competent adviser to establish the applicable scope and classification. The appropriate conformity assessment procedure depends on the equipment's classification. Agree the evidence needed for the intended application before approving production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 10 tonnes of unthreaded ductile iron dismantling joints, illustrative order under 7307 19 10 40, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £20,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £20,000, so it is £4,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: check flange drilling, sealing faces, bore and installed length against the approved drawing. Assemble a sample with the intended mating flange.

Adjustment and restraint: check sleeve travel, seal seating, tie-rod layout, nut access and fastener engagement throughout the agreed installation range.

Materials and coating: match casting identification to batch certificates, confirm seal and fastener materials, and check coating thickness, coverage and damage on arrival.

Leak tightness: witness the agreed pressure test on assembled samples at the specified setting and check for leakage at the gland and flange faces. Record results during quality inspection.

What goes wrong

Matching nominal bore does not guarantee matching flange drilling or face geometry. A joint can fit the pipe yet leave too little clearance to remove the valve. Check the complete installation drawing and trial assembly before ordering.

Damaged seals, uneven gland tightening, casting porosity and coating damage can cause leakage or corrosion. Missing tie rods or an unverified restraint arrangement can leave axial loads unresolved. Do not treat adjustment travel as permission for continuous movement; agree the intended function and installation instructions with the supplier.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on ductile iron dismantling joints from China?

The relevant lines in the supplied tariff record carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Which commodity code covers a ductile iron dismantling joint?

Check 7307 19 10 40 for an unthreaded spheroidal graphite cast iron fitting. Confirm the complete product against the tariff description using its drawing, materials and connections.

Can I use a China-made dismantling joint for drinking water?

Check compliance with the applicable Water Fittings Regulations and evidence for the exact joint, coating and seals. Confirm what the water company and customer accept before ordering.

Is a dismantling joint the same as an expansion joint?

Do not assume so. Specify installation adjustment separately from movement during operation, and confirm the joint's restraint arrangement and intended function with the supplier.
