Sourcing corrugated steel fasteners from China

Corrugated steel fasteners from China carry 0% UK duty across the supplied heading, with no listed trade remedy. Fasteners intended or likely to be used by consumers must be safe; construction use needs a separate check of the applicable marking route. Cambridge China Bridge sources corrugated steel fasteners.

Duty and classification for corrugated fasteners

Heading 7317 includes corrugated nails and similar iron or steel articles. For corrugated fasteners formed from sheet rather than wire, start with the Other line, 7317 00 80 00. The table shows product variants sharing that line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions. See the wider nails, staples and tacks guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, all lines supplied for this heading carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, steel trade measure, suspension or attached import control.

Give your customs broker a drawing, material description and details of whether the fastener is made from sheet or wire and supplied loose or collated. Confirm the commodity code before shipment; being supplied in strips does not itself establish that a sheet-made fastener belongs in the wire-nail line.

Specify the corrugation and the timber joint

Specify steel grade, sheet thickness, overall width, driving depth, wave pitch and height, cutting-edge profile and finish on an agreed drawing. State the timber species, joint layout, indoor or outdoor exposure and whether installation is by hand or with a named tool. Approve samples driven across the intended joint.

For construction use, ask the supplier to identify the applicable product standard or technical assessment and explain its coverage of this exact fastener. The CE construction-product route requires a declaration of performance where a harmonised standard or European Technical Assessment applies. CE marking remains available for construction products in Great Britain. Arrange a testing and certification review before accepting structural performance claims.

If the fasteners are intended or likely to be used by consumers, the general product safety rules apply. Products must be safe under normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Assess the cutting edge, handling and installation risks alongside the intended application.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative only, not a quotation: a trial pallet of loose corrugated steel fasteners under 7317 00 80 00, invoiced at £4,800 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,800, so it is £1,360. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Profile: measure sheet thickness, width, driving depth and corrugation against the approved drawing; compare loose and collated samples.

Driving: use the intended timber and tool; check for folded fasteners, split timber, incomplete seating and movement at the joint.

Finish: check the agreed coating or stainless material, rust, burrs and edge damage; compare samples with the approved finish.

Packing and records: check carton count or weight, separation of sizes and batch identification; match any performance documents to the supplied product. Use an agreed inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A fastener can match the overall width yet have a different wave profile or sheet thickness. It may feed poorly, fold during driving or leave a weak joint. An uneven cutting edge can pull the fastener sideways or split the timber. Keep the approved sample and trial the actual production batch.

Mixed depths, crushed collation and moisture inside cartons can make usable stock difficult to identify or install. Agree packing and rejection criteria before production, then repeat driving and joint checks when the goods arrive.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on corrugated steel fasteners from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty across heading 7317, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the exact code for your fastener.

Which commodity code covers sheet-made corrugated fasteners?

Start with 7317 00 80 00, the Other line. Ask your broker to confirm it using the drawing, material and manufacturing method; the wire-nail lines describe different construction.

Do corrugated fasteners need CE marking?

Check the intended construction use and applicable standard or technical assessment. The CE construction-product route requires a declaration of performance where the relevant coverage applies.

How do I check whether corrugated fasteners will work?

Drive production samples into the intended timber using the actual tool. Check feeding, seating, splitting and joint movement, as well as sheet thickness and wave profile.
