Sourcing chelating ion-exchange resins from China

Chelating ion-exchange resins from China carry 0% UK duty across the supplied heading 3914 lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty listed. Polymer registration exemptions do not settle the position of monomers and other reactants: check UK REACH coverage before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources chelating ion-exchange resins.

Zero duty on chelating resins

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 November 2026, heading 3914 covers ion-exchangers based on polymers of headings 3901 to 3913, in primary forms. Both supplied commodity lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is listed. The supplied file contains only the commodity lines shown here.

The tariff attaches waste import and export controls. For spent resin from China, confirm its waste classification and shipment requirements before dispatch. For imports to England under notification controls, the exporter must apply to the competent authority in the country of dispatch for consent. Ask your customs broker to confirm the complete approval and documentation route.

Match the composition and supplied form to the commodity code. The listed agarose suspension has specific composition conditions; the description alone is insufficient to select it. Use the wider ion-exchange resin guide for the broader heading.

Specify the target metal and operating conditions

Specify the target metal, competing ions, feed composition, acidity, temperature and intended process. Ask the factory to identify the chelating functional group, polymer matrix, bead structure and ionic form as shipped. Agree a performance test using your actual feed, including metal uptake, breakthrough behaviour and regeneration, rather than accepting a total-capacity figure as proof of selectivity.

Compare capacity on the same wet or dry basis and agree particle size, water retention, packing liquid and storage conditions. Polymers are exempt from UK REACH registration, but check the registration position of their monomers and other reactants. Check hazard classification, the safety data sheet and labels. Everyone in the supply chain is responsible for correct labelling and packaging before substances or mixtures reach the market.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative pilot order: 20 bags of chelating ion-exchange resin under 3914 00 00 90, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,500, so it is £700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the grade, functional group, ionic form and batch number against the purchase specification and batch analysis certificate.

Performance: test a representative sample with the agreed feed and method; compare target-metal removal, competing-ion effects and regeneration with the approved sample.

Beads: check the wet particle size distribution, fines and cracked beads; compare water retention with the agreed specification.

Packing: check seals, moisture condition, packing liquid and storage history. Retain labelled samples and record discrepancies using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A resin can meet a general capacity figure yet perform poorly with the buyer's feed. The functional group or ionic form differs from the approved sample, competing ions reduce useful uptake, or regeneration fails to restore performance. Agree the feed conditions and acceptance method before comparing suppliers.

Drying, damaged seals and broken beads can spoil an otherwise suitable batch. Keep laboratory chelating media distinct from industrial metal-removal grades, and confirm whether offered material is new or spent. Ask for the factory verification service to check the production site and its testing capability.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on chelating resin from China?

The supplied heading 3914 lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension listed.

Which commodity code covers chelating resin?

Check 3914 00 00 90 for other polymer-based resins in primary forms. Use 3914 00 00 10 only if the aqueous suspension meets its full listed composition.

Does chelating resin need UK REACH registration?

Polymers are exempt from registration, but their monomers and other reactants have a separate registration position. Check the supplied composition and coverage before importing.

How do I check a Chinese chelating resin sample?

Test it with your actual feed using agreed conditions. Compare target-metal uptake, breakthrough and regeneration, then check ionic form, wet bead size, fines and water retention.
