Sourcing carbide wire die blanks from China
Unmounted carbide wire-drawing die blanks from China carry 0% UK duty under the other unmounted cermet tooling line. Confirm classification and the workplace-product safety duties that apply before supply. Specify the carbide grade and machining allowance. Cambridge China Bridge sources unmounted carbide wire-drawing die blanks.

Zero duty on unmounted die blanks
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 8209 covers plates, sticks, tips and similar tool products, unmounted, of cermets. For the unmounted carbide wire-drawing die blanks covered here, use the “Other” line, 8209 00 80 00, subject to confirmation against the actual goods. The table shows product variants sharing that tariff line.
The supplied tariff snapshot records 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. The wider heading also has an indexable-insert line; see the carbide inserts and tool tips guide.
Give your customs broker the composition, drawing, photographs and condition at import, including whether a casing is fitted. Confirm the commodity code before shipment. For the illustrative order, use the method in UK import duty and VAT; zero customs duty does not remove import VAT.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unmounted carbide wire-drawing die blanks with an unfinished bore | 8209 00 80 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the grade, bore and finishing allowance
Describe the wire material, incoming and finished wire sizes, drawing conditions and lubricant. Agree the carbide grain size, binder type and content, hardness and supporting batch test data. Specify outside diameter, height, bore condition, concentricity and machining allowance on the drawing. Make clear whether the supplier delivers an unfinished hole or a finished drawing profile.
HSE identifies general workplace-product duties where more specific product safety law does not apply. Ask for information on safe handling, mounting and finishing. UK REACH registration applies in limited cases to substances in articles; review the supplied composition rather than assuming a carbide blank has the same obligations as carbide powder.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 50 unmounted carbide wire-drawing die blanks, illustrative order only under 8209 00 80 00, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £450 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,450. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,450, so it is £490. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Dimensions: measure outside diameter, height, bore position and remaining machining allowance against the approved drawing.
Material: match the grade and batch identification to the material report; compare agreed hardness and density results with the approved sample.
Condition: inspect bore entrances, faces and edges under magnification for cracks, chips and visible pores; check that blanks cannot strike each other in transit.
Finishing trial: finish and mount sample blanks using your normal process, then draw your own wire and check diameter, surface marks and die wear. Record the checks in the quality inspection brief.

What goes wrong
An oversized unfinished bore can leave too little material for the required profile. An off-centre hole can leave an uneven wall after finishing. Cracks or chips may become apparent during grinding or mounting, while a mismatched grade can give poor wear performance or breakage.
Approve a drawing and a finishing trial before accepting a bulk batch. Keep grade and batch identities separate during storage, and agree how failed samples affect acceptance of the lot. A supplier's grade name alone is insufficient for comparing material from different factories.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on carbide wire-drawing die blanks from China?
The supplied tariff snapshot records 0% for the “Other” unmounted cermet tooling line, 8209 00 80 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.
Are carbide die blanks the same as finished drawing dies?
Specify the delivered condition. A blank may need bore finishing and mounting. If the goods include a casing or arrive as a complete tool, ask your broker to check classification again.
What should I put on the drawing for a carbide die blank?
Show outside diameter, height, bore condition and position, concentricity, tolerances and finishing allowance. State the grade and whether the drawing profile is unfinished or finished.
How do I check a new supplier's carbide die blanks?
Check dimensions, batch material data and visible defects, then finish and mount samples. Draw your own wire and compare surface finish, dimensional stability and wear with your current blanks.
