Sourcing Bicycle Lights From China: Own-Brand Buying Guide

Define the destination market, intended road use and front-and-rear specification. Approve samples, check applicable conformity requirements and lithium-battery evidence, agree branding minimums, and inspect production before shipment. Brightness claims and CE or UKCA marks alone do not establish road legality.

Start with your market, riding conditions and complete set

For an individual buying a set, a bike shop launching a label or a larger importer building a range, begin by telling the supplier where the lights will be used and what claims you intend to make. Distinguish lamps intended to provide required road lighting from supplementary visibility lights.

Specify the front and rear lamps together: light colour, beam, operating modes, mounting positions, bracket compatibility, battery identity, USB charging arrangement, cables, port covers, instructions and retail packaging. Identify whether a mains charger is included and assess its applicable requirements separately.

Ask the supplier to identify the contracting business and actual production site. Request evidence for the offered model and configuration, then compare it with a physical sample.

Turn lumen, runtime and IP claims into purchase conditions

Put measurable acceptance criteria in the order before approving production. Ask how each advertised lumen and runtime claim was measured, including operating mode, battery condition, temperature and the endpoint used for runtime. Record output over time so a brief initial peak is not confused with sustained performance.

For an IP claim, request the test method, report and tested configuration. Match the housing, seals and charging-port cover to the goods being ordered. Specify whether the cover must be closed during testing and use; do not accept an undefined promise of waterproof construction.

Set the compliance route before printing your brand

Create a requirements list for each destination. Assess product conformity, road-lighting rules, battery transport and applicable waste obligations separately. Request the relevant reports and declarations, with a clear connection between the assessed product and your order.

For the EU, CE marking is required only where applicable EU legislation requires it. A business having goods made and selling them under its own name or brand is treated as the manufacturer. Identify all applicable requirements before approving the mark or packaging.

For Great Britain, assess whether the rechargeable lamp falls within the electromagnetic compatibility and RoHS regimes. GOV.UK confirms continued recognition of qualifying CE-marked products under EMC alongside UKCA. Support the chosen route with the required conformity assessment, technical documentation and declaration.

Read CE and UKCA marking for China imports and own-brand manufacturer responsibilities for the detailed routes. These product-conformity checks do not establish compliance with a destination's road-lighting rules.

Great Britain worked example: road-lighting claims

The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989, as amended, apply in Great Britain, not Northern Ireland. For road use between sunset and sunrise, cycles require white front and red rear lights and a red rear reflector. Amber reflectors must face forwards and backwards on each pedal; cycles manufactured before 1 October 1985 are exempt from the pedal-reflector requirement.

GOV.UK says obligatory lamps capable of steady output must meet BS 6102/3 and carry the corresponding marking, including when used flashing. Purely flashing obligatory lamps need 1 to 4 equal flashes per second and at least 4 candela, without that British Standard requirement. Its guidance also accepts marked corresponding EC-country standards providing equivalent safety.

Before advertising a steady-and-flashing set as road legal, request evidence for its modes, performance and required markings. Lumens alone are insufficient. Check reflector compliance separately. Supplementary lamps must have the correct colour, avoid dazzling other road users and, when flashing, use 1 to 4 equal flashes per second.

Get lithium-battery evidence before booking samples or stock

Request the exact cell and battery specification, UN 38.3 test summary and supporting report references. Match the paperwork to the installed battery and prohibit substitutions without written approval and an evidence review. The UK Civil Aviation Authority identifies UN Manual of Tests and Criteria subsection 38.3 among the international manufacturing and testing requirements for lithium batteries.

Give the forwarder the battery details, whether batteries are installed or packed separately, proposed carton contents and transport route. Obtain confirmation of classification, packing, marks, labels, documents and carrier acceptance before dispatch. A test summary does not settle those shipment-specific requirements.

For US-bound shipments, consult PHMSA's official lithium-battery test-summary guidance. Confirm the requirements for the actual shipment rather than assuming that acceptance on another route transfers automatically.

Ask for the MOQ of each change, then compare complete costs

Request separate minimum order quantities for an existing unbranded set, body printing, custom colour, packaging and any changed battery or electronics. Ask which production constraint creates each minimum and whether existing components can support a smaller opening order. Use the supplier's written offer rather than an assumed industry-wide MOQ.

Compare quotations against the same approved specification. Separate goods, tooling, artwork, samples, testing, inspection, battery transport, freight, clearance, taxes and delivery. Agree responsibility for defective goods, replacement brackets and warranty stock before paying.

UK cost example: for sets delivered to Cambridge, customs valuation includes applicable transport and insurance costs to the UK border. Import VAT valuation starts with the customs value and adds import duties and relevant incidental expenses to the first UK destination, plus such expenses arising from transport to a further UK destination known at importation. Avoid adding costs twice; confirm classification and applicable rates before declaration.

Request quotations that state the supplier, inspection and delivery scope clearly, then compare the complete cost of the proposed opening order.

Inspect production and control repeat orders

Keep an identified approved sample and a controlled specification covering the battery, circuit, optics, housing, seals and brackets. Require approval before any component change. Agree the inspection sample selection, methods, acceptance criteria and reporting before production.

Use production samples for the performance checks in the table. Inspect the actual retail set, charging accessories, labels and carton contents. Photograph findings, identify affected batches and agree corrective action and reinspection before releasing the shipment.

Define which checks belong in the factory inspection and which require laboratory testing. Use the pre-shipment inspection service to agree the inspection scope.

Cambridge China Bridge offers supplier selection, sample coordination and own-brand sourcing. Audits and inspections are usually included in the quote for an order placed with the company; complex checks requiring a third party cost extra, agreed in advance. Confirm the scope in your quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put my shop's logo on an existing bicycle light?

Ask for the printing minimum and confirm that the evidence covers the supplied configuration. Having goods made and selling them under your own brand makes you the manufacturer under EU rules; GB EMC rules also impose manufacturer duties on own-brand sellers.

Does CE marking make a bicycle light road legal?

CE marking concerns applicable product-conformity requirements. Separately verify the destination's road-lighting rules, including operating modes, performance and required markings.

What MOQ should I expect for a front and rear set?

Get written minimum quantities for the set, logo, colour and packaging separately. Compare an existing model with a customised version using the supplier's actual offer.

How can I check the claimed lumens and battery runtime?

Agree suitable measurements by mode and record output through the discharge test. Define runtime's endpoint and conditions before comparing supplier claims.

Is an IP logo enough to support a waterproof claim?

Request the report and test method for the exact housing, seals and port cover. Match the tested configuration and stated conditions to your product and instructions.

Can the supplier send rechargeable samples by ordinary courier?

Have the forwarder or carrier confirm acceptance using the actual battery, packing and route. Do not assume that samples are exempt from battery-transport requirements.

What if the factory changes the battery after sample approval?

Require written approval before substitution. Review the battery evidence, charging compatibility and affected performance or compliance testing before accepting the change.
