Sourcing own-brand bicycle lights from China

Start with an approved front and rear USB-rechargeable light set, evidence for its intended road use, and tests of beam, run-time, water resistance and charging. Ask for the factory's minimum in writing, then place a small trial order. Cambridge China Bridge coordinates sourcing with its own staff in China.

Specify the powered set and approve the branding

For a bike-shop group, brief the factory on the front and rear lamps together: mounting brackets, charging cables, operating modes, battery identity and replacement arrangements. Specify whether the set is intended to provide the obligatory road lighting or additional visibility. This guide concerns powered lamps; use the separate guides for cycle helmets, tyres and bicycle parts and electric bikes when buying those products.

Approve the brand marking on the body, its position and resistance to rubbing, alongside the retail box and instruction leaflet. Include fitting, aiming, mode selection, charging, storage and care instructions. Check that packaging claims match the approved product and supporting reports. Request a packed production sample, including every accessory, before releasing artwork. Our own-brand service can coordinate the factory brief and sample work.

Separate road-use evidence from brightness claims

GOV.UK identifies the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989, as amended, as the lighting rules for Great Britain. Between sunset and sunrise, its guidance requires a white front light, red rear light, red rear reflector and amber/yellow reflectors facing forwards and backwards on each pedal. A lamp set alone does not supply every required reflector. The guidance does not apply to Northern Ireland; check that destination with the authority.

For an obligatory lamp capable of steady light, GOV.UK says it must meet the British Standard and be marked accordingly, even when flashing. The legislation identifies BS 6102: Part 3 and its amended versions. GOV.UK also recognises corresponding standards providing equivalent safety. Ask for evidence identifying the exact lamp, applicable standard and marking; a brightness claim or CE logo does not answer that request.

Flashing-only obligatory lamps have separate flash-rate and luminous-intensity requirements in the official guidance. Ask the laboratory to assess the proposed modes against those requirements rather than inventing acceptance limits. GOV.UK places non-lighting matters, such as brakes, under the Pedal Cycles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1983. Keep that distinction in the retailer's specification and product descriptions.

Check electronics compliance before printing marks

For Great Britain, assess electromagnetic compatibility and restriction of hazardous substances separately. EMC rules cover electrical and electronic equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance, subject to exceptions. RoHS controls hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. Ask for the finished lamp's technical documentation, relevant test evidence and declaration of conformity, matching the circuit, charging system, materials and supplied cable.

Official guidance permits CE or UKCA marking for compliant products under these regimes in Great Britain. Confirm the chosen route and applicable requirements before printing. Under RoHS, an importer selling under its own brand takes on manufacturer obligations. EMC guidance requires relevant instructions in English. Allocate responsibility for the technical file, declaration, product identification and markings before approving the branded sample.

The Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations cover equipment designed or adapted for use between 50 and 1,000 volts alternating current and 75 and 1,500 volts direct current. A USB-rechargeable lamp whose specified voltages fall below those ranges is outside that voltage scope; confirm the actual ratings. Assess any supplied mains adaptor separately. Falling outside this scope does not settle EMC, RoHS or the product's safety assessment.

Identify the lithium battery and agree shipping

Ask for the lithium cell and battery manufacturer's identity, exact model, specification and UN 38.3 test summary. Have the forwarder check that the summary covers the battery actually installed in the lamps. Freeze that battery identity in the order and require written approval for substitutions. Check the removal arrangements and request clear battery handling and disposal instructions.

GOV.UK requires batteries to carry the crossed-out wheeled-bin symbol, with a packaging provision where an incorporated battery cannot practicably be marked. Review the applicable labelling with the factory. Before shipping samples or stock, give the forwarder the battery specification and proposed packing. Ask it to confirm the transport classification, packaging, marks, documents and carrier acceptance for the selected route; check uncertainties with the authority or your clearing agent.

Inspect performance against the approved sample

Agree the test methods and acceptance criteria before production. Use production samples and retain a reference set with its approved battery, optics, seals and charging components. Record the equipment, operating mode and conditions used, so repeat batches can be compared meaningfully.

Keep performance inspection separate from the laboratory evidence supporting road-use and compliance claims. Record failures by lamp and batch, agree corrective action, and repeat the affected checks before shipment.

Practical inspection methods to agree with the factory
CheckMethodRecord
Brightness and beam patternMeasure output with suitable equipment and compare the beam at agreed mounting positions and distances with the approved sample.Mode, conditions, output changes, dark areas and glare observations.
Battery run-timeFully charge using the specified charging arrangement, run each claimed mode and record output over time to the agreed endpoint.Battery identity, conditions, dimming behaviour and achieved run-time.
Waterproof claimMatch the claimed IP rating to a report for the exact housing and seals; arrange the corresponding test with the charging-port cover positioned as instructed.Report identity, sample construction, water ingress and function after testing.
Charging-port durabilityRepeat plug insertion and removal using the supplied cable under an agreed method; inspect the socket, cover and charging behaviour.Looseness, damaged contacts, cover damage and intermittent charging.

Get the factory minimum, then budget the import

The MOQ is the factory's own minimum. Ask for it in writing for the lamp set, body marking and printed packaging, including which production constraint sets each minimum. Approve samples first, then negotiate a small order using the agreed configuration. Review shop feedback and returns before expanding the range. The MOQ and sampling guide explains the wider sequence.

The heading 8512 API lists the declarable leaf code 8512100000 for lighting or visual signalling equipment used on bicycles. Its commodity API shows standard third-country duty of 2.00% and import VAT of 20%. These are the ordinary tariff lines for the proposed China-origin bicycle lamps; ask your clearing agent to confirm classification of the complete packed set and the measures applicable when declaring it.

Request a landed-cost breakdown covering goods, branding, samples, testing, inspection, battery transport, freight, clearance, duty and VAT in separate lines. Agree who arranges each step before production. For destinations outside the UK, check with the authority or your clearing agent.

Frequently asked questions

Are CE-marked bicycle lights road legal?

CE marking does not establish compliance with bicycle road-lighting requirements. Ask for the exact lamp's road-use evidence, operating-mode assessment and required markings.

What is the MOQ for own-brand bicycle lights?

Ask the factory for its own minimum in writing, separating the lamp set, body marking and packaging. Approve samples before negotiating a small trial order.

What battery paperwork should I request?

Request the exact cell and battery specification and UN 38.3 test summary. Have the forwarder check the installed battery and confirm packing, documents and carrier acceptance.

How do I check a waterproof bicycle light?

Match the IP claim to a report for the exact housing, seals and port cover. Agree the corresponding test and check both ingress and operation afterwards.
