Bamboo faces and core construction decide the code

Heading 4412 covers plywood, veneered panels and similar laminated wood. This guide concerns bamboo plywood panels, including bamboo faces over wood cores. Specify the face material, face thickness and every core material before choosing the code. See the wider plywood guide for other panel constructions. For balsa panels, see our balsa plywood sourcing guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all bamboo lines carried 10% duty for goods from China. These lines list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control. The table shows furniture and interior-fitting examples separately under the same residual code; their intended use does not create separate tariff lines.

Ask your customs broker to compare the complete layer specification with the tariff wording, particularly for thin bamboo faces and engineered mixed veneers. Confirm the commodity code before ordering. Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT for the valuation method.

Specify bamboo faces, core layers and glue

State whether the panel is bamboo throughout or bamboo-faced with a wood core. Record the layer arrangement, grain direction, face thickness, finished dimensions, machining allowances and acceptable bow. Agree colour and surface appearance against a retained sample, including whether the finish is natural, darkened, coated or ready for finishing.

Specify the intended dry, humid or exterior conditions and agree bond and formaldehyde testing for that use. For construction applications, check the applicable panel standard and performance declaration rather than relying on an exterior-grade label. CE marking continues to be available for construction products placed on the Great Britain market.

Confirm with the relevant authority or your customs broker whether timber due diligence requirements apply to the actual plywood construction. Obtain the species, harvest origin and legality documents for the layers before ordering, including any wood core hidden behind bamboo faces. Arrange testing and certification against the actual panel construction and intended use.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 50 cubic metres of bamboo plywood panels under 4412 10 00 90, invoiced at £22,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £25,500. Duty at 10% is £2,550. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £28,050, so it is £5,610. Import taxes total £8,160; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,550 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Layers: cut sample panels to check bamboo faces, core materials, grain direction, voids and overlaps against the approved construction.

Dimensions: measure thickness across each sampled sheet, check squareness and bow, and trial the intended machining or fixing method.

Bond and surface: check exposed edges for separation, test the agreed bond performance, and compare colour, sanding and coating with the retained sample.

Arrival condition: inspect wrapping, corners and bundle supports for damage or damp; record moisture and mould before releasing stock. Use a written inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A bamboo face can conceal a substituted wood core, gaps or uneven glue coverage. Panels may look acceptable in a bundle but split at machined edges or separate after exposure to moisture. Compare cut sections and test results with the approved sample before accepting the batch.

Damp packs can arrive bowed or mouldy, while colour variation becomes obvious when panels are fitted side by side. Keep affected packs identifiable, photograph the condition before unpacking and assess the panels against agreed acceptance criteria. If core-origin documents are missing, ask the relevant authority or your customs broker whether they are needed for any applicable timber due diligence requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on bamboo plywood from China?

The bamboo lines in heading 4412 carry 10% duty in the supplied tariff snapshot, with no listed trade remedy or suspension. Confirm the precise code against the face and core construction.

Is bamboo-faced plywood always bamboo throughout?

No. Bamboo faces may cover a wood core. Ask for a layer drawing and cut sample panels to confirm the core materials before approving production.

Do bamboo plywood panels need timber due diligence?

Gather species, harvest-origin and legality documents, including those for wood core plies.

Can I use bamboo plywood outdoors?

Agree the exposure conditions, bond performance, finish and edge protection before ordering. Test the actual panel construction rather than accepting an exterior-grade description alone.
