Sourcing engine cooling radiators from China

Chinese engine cooling radiators normally carry 4% UK duty; associated parts carry 2%, with narrow suspensions on specialised lines. Products for consumer use must be safe. Specify vehicle fit, core construction and leak-test acceptance before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources automotive engine cooling radiators.

UK duty on radiators and related parts

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, ordinary replacement radiators under 8708 91 35 90 carried 4% duty from China. Other radiator parts and the listed mounting brackets carried 2%. These selected lines have no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Heading 8708 covers motor-vehicle parts and accessories; see the wider automotive aftermarket parts guide. For brake components, see our automotive brake disc sourcing guide.

The table includes a specialised compressed-air cooler for comparison, rather than as a substitute code for a coolant radiator. Its listed 0% suspension and the narrow suspension for specified compressed-air assemblies under the radiator-parts line do not provide a general radiator exemption. The tariff attaches a restriction concerning ozone-depleting substances and an export-licence entry. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable declaration requirements for goods from China.

Confirm the commodity code using the drawing, cooling medium, construction and intended use. Do not classify a complete radiator as a part merely because it is supplied without brackets. Have the broker check any suspension against the exact goods description before claiming relief.

Specify the coolant circuit and vehicle fit

Order against the vehicle manufacturer's part reference, engine application and transmission variant. Fix core dimensions, tube and fin arrangement, tank material, hose connection positions, mounting points, drain fitting and fan-shroud interfaces. State whether an integrated transmission oil cooler is included and identify its connections. For rear axle orders, see our rear axle sourcing guide.

Agree coolant compatibility, operating conditions, heat-rejection evidence and leak-test acceptance in the purchase specification. Request test records linked to the supplied part reference and production batch. For consumer-use radiators sold in Great Britain, the general product safety rules require safe products; a matching catalogue photograph does not establish safety or fit.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative mixed-model stock order of replacement engine cooling radiators under 8708 91 35 90, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £31,500. Duty at 4% is £1,260. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £32,760, so it is £6,552. Import taxes total £7,812; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,260 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: compare sampled radiators with the approved drawing and reference sample, including mounting locations, hose necks and shroud attachment points.

Sealing: witness the agreed pressure and leak test, inspect tank crimps and brazed joints, and test any integrated oil cooler separately for leakage.

Core condition: check for crushed fins, distorted tubes, damaged hose necks and loose brackets; inspect again when the shipment arrives.

Identification and packing: match part references and batch markings to cartons and packing lists, and check that packing supports the tanks while protecting the core.

What goes wrong

A radiator can resemble the approved sample yet have a thinner core, shifted hose outlets or incompatible oil-cooler fittings. Tank seams may leak after installation, while packing that presses against the fins can damage otherwise acceptable goods. Specify these features explicitly and retain the approved sample.

Separate suspect stock by part reference and batch before dispatch to customers. Record arrival damage and test results, then agree corrective action with the supplier. Use a quality inspection plan that checks fit and sealing as well as carton appearance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on engine cooling radiators from China?

Ordinary replacement radiators under 8708 91 35 90 carry 4%; other radiator parts carry 2%. The supplied tariff data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty on these lines.

What should I give a Chinese radiator factory?

Provide the vehicle manufacturer's part reference, engine and transmission application, drawing or sample, core construction, connection details and agreed leak-test acceptance.

Can I use the compressed-air cooler code for an engine radiator?

Do not choose it just because it has a suspension. It describes a specialised compressed-air cooler for industrial assembly. Ask your broker to classify the actual coolant radiator.

How do I check radiators when they arrive?

Check part references, mounting points, hose necks, fins and tank seams against the approved sample. Inspect packing damage and repeat the agreed leak checks on sampled goods.
