Sourcing exhaust silencers from China

UK duty is 2% to 4% across the referenced silencer and parts lines, before conditional relief. Vehicles used on public roads are subject to noise limits; confirm the relevant pre-sale safety requirements and compliance evidence with the relevant authority. Specify fitment and silencer construction. Cambridge China Bridge sources automotive exhaust silencers.

UK import duty on exhaust silencers

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8708 covers motor-vehicle parts and accessories. The supplied facts include other silencer and exhaust-pipe parts under 8708 92 99 00 at 2%. The table repeats that parts code for different purchasing applications; these are not separate tariff subdivisions. The published automotive aftermarket guide lists complete aftermarket silencers and exhaust pipes under 8708 92 35 00 at 4%.

The supplied parts line records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. It lists a 0.00 % autonomous suspension for narrowly described exhaust components, including a specified inner liner. The product description is truncated, and the footnote excludes products made up of different components containing the qualifying product. Have your broker check the full scope before claiming relief. Confirm the commodity code for the actual assembly or loose parts.

The tariff attaches an ozone-depleting-substance restriction on entry into free circulation and a cultural-object export-licence measure. Ask your customs broker to confirm the declaration and documentary requirements for goods from China, including whether the export measure is relevant. Obtain the supplier's material declaration. The import duty and VAT guide explains how import taxes enter the landed cost.

Specify fitment, internal construction and noise evidence

Order against the original vehicle manufacturer's part reference, vehicle application and approved drawing. Fix the silencer position, body shape, inlet and outlet orientation, pipe connections, flange pattern, hanger locations and clearance to surrounding components. State whether connecting pipes, clamps, gaskets and mounting hardware are included.

Specify shell and pipe materials, wall thickness, weld construction, internal baffles, perforated tubes, packing material and corrosion protection. Agree leak testing, fitment checks and application-specific acoustic testing. Ask for reports identifying the actual silencer design and vehicle application, rather than a report for a similar-looking product.

Public-road vehicles are subject to noise limits. Before selling imported products, confirm the relevant regulations, safety requirements and compliance evidence with the relevant authority. Define the evidence needed for the intended application through testing and certification support.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 300 sets of other replacement exhaust silencer parts under 8708 92 99 00, invoiced at £9,500 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £11,000. Duty at 2% is £220. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £11,220, so it is £2,244. Import taxes total £2,464; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £220 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match part references, vehicle applications, batch identification and supplied fittings to the order, box labels and packing list.

Fitment: check inlet and outlet geometry, flange alignment, hanger positions and body clearance against the drawing and agreed fixture.

Construction: inspect seams, welds, shell condition, pipe ends and finish; witness the agreed leak test and check for loose internal components.

Arrival: inspect for crushed shells, bent hangers, damaged connections, corrosion and mixed boxes before releasing stock. Plan sampling with the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A silencer can resemble the sample yet have a different pipe angle or hanger position, making installation difficult or leaving it in contact with the body. Poor seams can leak; loose baffles can rattle. Check the assembled product in a fitment fixture and protect projecting pipes and hangers during transport.

Changes to baffles, packing or internal tube layout can change sound and flow behaviour without changing the exterior. Record the agreed construction and require your approval before substitutions. A visual inspection cannot establish acoustic performance. Keep test reports and inspection results linked to the production batch, and investigate suspect stock before release.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on exhaust silencers from China?

The supplied other-parts line carries 2%. The published reference guide lists complete aftermarket silencers and exhaust pipes at 4%. Specific parts may qualify for conditional suspension; confirm the actual code and eligibility.

Can I claim duty suspension for a complete silencer?

Do not assume so. The supplied suspension describes particular exhaust components and has a truncated product footnote. Ask your broker to check the full description before claiming relief.

What should I send a Chinese exhaust silencer factory?

Send vehicle applications, original part references, drawings and a reference sample. Specify connections, hangers, materials, internal construction, included fittings and the agreed acoustic and leak tests.

How do I check exhaust silencers before shipment?

Check identity, mounting geometry, welds, finish and leak-test results. Compare the supplied construction with the approved design and obtain acoustic reports for the intended vehicle application.
