Can I sell a lookalike on an existing Amazon UK ASIN?

Only use an existing Amazon UK ASIN when your stock is the exact product described, with matching brand, model, configuration and pack contents. A similar shape or matching barcode is insufficient. Resolve identity and sourcing evidence before buying stock. Sample comparisons in China can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Decide whether it is the same product

Treat the ASIN as a candidate to investigate, not a specification to send straight to production. Save the selected variant, title, brand field, model details, photographs and stated contents with the date. Our Amazon UK sourcing guide covers account and listing preparation; this comparison should happen before you commit to stock.

Ask the supplier whether it offers genuine stock of the listed brand, its own branded alternative or an unbranded lookalike. Request photographs of the actual product and packaging alongside the proposed invoice description. Statements such as 'same factory' or 'same mould' leave product identity and brand authority unresolved.

Compare the packed samples side by side

Where possible, buy the selected listing variant and obtain the supplier's proposed finished retail sample. Keep the reference purchase record and seller details. Photograph each pack before opening, then lay out its contents. A marketplace purchase is a comparison reference, not independent proof of authenticity.

Use the sheet below to record the listing claim, reference sample, supplier sample and supporting document for each field. Mark each result as matched, different or not confirmed. Measure and try the products rather than relying on photographs. Ask for an explanation where the page and reference sample disagree.

Fields to compare before choosing a listing route
FieldPhysical checkEvidence to request
BrandCompare the catalogue brand with logos and brand spelling on the product, box and instructions.Stock provenance and confirmation covering the supplier, product and proposed selling channel.
Model and configurationCompare model markings, size, colour, materials, controls, connections and fitted components.Factory specification and an explained mapping between factory and retail model names.
Pack contentsUnpack everything; compare accessories, fixings, instructions, consumables and the stated pack quantity. An itemised packing list and photographs of the complete proposed retail pack.
IdentifiersRead and scan the product barcode; record model, batch and serial markings separately.Identifier allocation records and a mapping to the exact variant and pack.
Function and claimsTry assembly, fit and intended use; compare results with the listing's claims.Relevant test evidence tied to the proposed model and configuration.

Separate identifiers from product identity

Keep the Amazon catalogue identifier, product barcode and your internal stock reference in separate fields. A readable barcode connects a code to a record; it does not establish that the contents are genuine or match that record. Follow our barcode validation guide for allocation, print and receiving-system checks.

Do not ask the factory to copy the reference barcode or model label to make a different product appear to match. If factory and retail model names differ, request records explaining the relationship. Keep unresolved mappings visible. A different brand, accessory set or configuration should trigger a review of the listing route.

Check brand authority and lookalike concerns

For claimed branded stock, investigate its origin and selling permissions separately from the physical comparison. Confirm supplier statements with the brand owner through independently obtained contact details. Ask what any authorisation actually covers, including the product and channel. Our counterfeit avoidance guide covers the wider supplier and brand checks.

UK intellectual property protection includes copyright, patents, designs and trade marks. Government guidance says using a registered design requires a licence from its owner or buying the design. Removing a logo therefore leaves design questions to investigate. If the proposed shape, mechanism or artwork raises concerns, ask a UK intellectual property adviser to review the actual sample before ordering.

Record the decision before buying stock

For an evidenced exact match, investigate the existing listing route and any prompts in your seller account. For a different product, investigate a separate listing using its actual identity. For an unresolved mismatch, hold the purchase. Do not edit an existing product's brand or contents to accommodate your alternative. Creating a separate listing still leaves sourcing and intellectual property questions to resolve.

Attach the comparison record, approved sample photographs, specification, pack list and identifier mapping to the purchase brief. Record who approves changes before production or dispatch. Use our bulk production and sample guide for production controls. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate physical comparisons and supplier enquiries through its own staff in China; keep listing approval within your business.

Frequently asked questions

Can I join an Amazon UK listing with a lookalike?

Only pursue it when the stock is the exact listed product. Compare brand, model, configuration and contents. A similar photograph or supplier assurance is insufficient.

Does the same barcode mean it is the same product?

No. Check who controls the identifier and which variant and pack it describes. Compare the physical contents and stock provenance separately.

Can I join the ASIN if my sample has extra accessories?

Treat different pack contents as a mismatch to resolve before ordering. Investigate a listing for the actual pack rather than assuming extra accessories are acceptable.

What should I ask the factory before buying stock?

Request the finished retail sample, specification, itemised pack list, label photographs, identifier records and stock provenance. Ask it to explain every difference from the selected listing.
