Return a China purchase without a printer
Ask the seller to replace its printable label with a carrier-supported QR code, or arrange collection with the label supplied. Confirm that the option covers the actual return route and who prints any customs paperwork. Keep a receipt linked to tracking at handover. Factory return arrangements can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Check where the label sends your return
Read the destination on the seller’s label before asking for an alternative. Is it a UK returns warehouse or an address in China? Send the seller your order reference and explain that you cannot print. Ask for an alternative linked to the approved return, rather than buying replacement postage immediately.
For a personal purchase going back to China, use our return preparation guide for address approval and contents checks. For business stock, use export clearance for returned stock. This guide focuses on resolving the printing barrier.
Request a code the carrier can actually use
Ask: “Please issue a carrier-supported QR code for this return and confirm where staff can scan it and print the label.” Request the carrier name, eligible drop-off location and instructions for the booked service. Ask specifically whether that location supports your destination and parcel, especially when the return goes directly to China.
Do not turn the label file into your own QR code or assume a barcode on it enables printing. Ask the seller or carrier to confirm the printing function. Save the supplied code and instructions on your phone, and check that the return reference and destination match the approved booking.
Ask for collection with the label supplied
If drop-off printing is unavailable, ask the seller to arrange collection with the driver bringing the label. Obtain written confirmation that label supply is included in this particular booking. Ask who books and pays, what packing is expected, and what collection acknowledgement you will receive.
You can write: “I cannot print the supplied label. Please provide a supported printing code or book collection with the label supplied. Please also confirm how customs paperwork will be provided.” If neither option works, ask for a posted label or agree local printing and its cost. Resolve timing using our return deadline guide.
Resolve customs printing separately
HMRC says that when you send a package outside the UK, you must complete and attach a customs declaration. For a return addressed to China, treat customs paperwork as a separate check from obtaining the transport label. Do not assume that a printing code or driver-supplied label also provides the declaration.
Ask the carrier which declaration and supporting documents your shipment needs, who supplies the goods information, and who prints and attaches the paperwork. Ask whether electronic submission also involves documents travelling with the parcel. Have the carrier confirm a workable arrangement before handover; keep copies of the completed documents.

Leave with evidence of handover
At drop-off, check the printed label against the approved destination before the parcel leaves your possession. For collection, check the supplied label where possible. Request a receipt or electronic acknowledgement linked to the parcel’s tracking reference, and save it with the seller’s replacement-label instructions.
Check tracking for acceptance after handover. Label creation alone does not establish that the carrier received the parcel. If acknowledgement is missing, contact the collection team or drop-off point promptly and request written confirmation. Our lost prepaid return guide explains the evidence to assemble if the parcel goes missing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I show the printable return label on my phone?
Ask the carrier whether the chosen location can print from that file. Request a supported printing code if needed; do not assume that showing the label or its barcode is enough.
Can the collection driver bring my return label?
Ask the seller to book that option and confirm it in writing. Check that the actual booking includes label supply, and resolve customs-paperwork printing separately.
Does a return QR code replace customs documents?
Do not assume it does. HMRC requires a completed, attached customs declaration for a package sent outside the UK. Ask the carrier who prints and attaches it and any supporting paperwork.
What proof should I keep after a printer-free return?
Keep a handover receipt or electronic acknowledgement linked to tracking, the seller’s instructions and copies of customs documents. Save the acceptance scan when available.
