Is a replacement cordless-tool battery safe?
Connector fit does not establish safety. Match the exact battery, tool and charger models, check electrical limits and protection signals, and obtain test evidence for that combination. Hold the order if evidence is missing or the design changes. Factory evidence can be gathered by the China-based staff of Cambridge China Bridge.

Define the exact combination before requesting samples
Record the tool model, charger model and replacement battery model, including their revisions. Photograph labels and terminals. Ask the tool manufacturer which batteries and chargers it supports. A factory’s compatibility claim is separate from manufacturer approval. If the manufacturer excludes replacement packs, choose its recommended pack rather than treating a sourcing check as permission to disregard its instructions.
Ask for a compatibility schedule naming each supported combination and its exclusions. Compare chemistry, nominal and maximum charged voltage, charging current, discharge capability, terminal polarity, latch security and cooling clearances. Include any adaptor in the assessment. Matching voltage labels and sliding into the tool are insufficient. Use our lithium battery sourcing guide for broader battery procurement checks.
Trace how the protection systems work together
Ask the factory to explain which protections sit in the pack, tool and charger, and what signals connect them. Request evidence for overcharge, excessive discharge, excessive current, short circuit and temperature protection. Check cell monitoring and balancing arrangements where relevant. A photograph of a protection board does not demonstrate that the complete combination responds safely.
Ask what happens when a temperature sensor fails, a signal contact disconnects or the tool draws excessive current. Have a competent laboratory assess these conditions without bypassing protections yourself. Inspect wiring retention, insulation and cell connections through a qualified reviewer. An official report on an Aeboren replacement tool battery identified wiring that could detach and bypass its protection circuit, creating a fire risk.
Require evidence for the supplied design
Request complete reports identifying the pack model, cell manufacturer and model, cell arrangement, protection-board revision and firmware revision where applicable. Ask which tool and charger models were actually used. A cell report, transport test summary or generic certificate does not establish compatibility of the assembled pack with your equipment. Our test-report verification guide explains how to check the underlying documents.
Ask the laboratory to explain its chosen test methods and coverage, including any untested combinations. Obtain measured results and sample photographs, then compare them with the proposed production specification. Assess charger safety separately from its charging behaviour: an official tool-charger report identified a high risk of electric shock, fire and explosion. Successful charging alone cannot settle those risks.
Test normal use and fault responses safely
Agree a laboratory test plan using the exact combination and representative work. Cover starting loads, sustained use, repeated charging, charging after use and behaviour near the stated operating limits. Record temperatures, current, voltage, charging termination and protective shutdowns. HSE advises checking that charging equipment suits the battery, including its voltage and charging rate.
Leave short-circuit, forced-overcharge and other abuse tests to a suitably equipped laboratory. Do not open packs, bridge contacts or defeat a charger’s rejection signal during buyer trials. Stop trials if there is swelling, unusual heat, smell, noise or damaged contacts. A brief demonstration establishes only what happened during that demonstration; it does not prove fault protection.

Keep production tied to the tested combination
Freeze the approved cells, wiring, protection hardware, firmware and casing in the order specification. Retain an approved sample and batch identifiers. Require written approval before substitutions and ask the laboratory whether changes invalidate previous results. Our component-substitution guide covers that approval process. Missing model-specific evidence is a reason to hold purchasing or release.
Put the supported tool and charger combinations, exclusions and charging instructions in customer-facing documents. Search official safety reports and recalls against the pack and charger identifiers before release. Keep battery registration as a separate workstream using our battery registration guide. Cambridge China Bridge’s staff in China can request factory records and check production against the agreed specification.
Frequently asked questions
Is a replacement battery safe if it fits my drill?
Fit confirms only the mechanical connection. Check the exact tool and charger models, electrical limits, protection signals and test coverage before accepting compatibility.
Can I charge a replacement pack with my original charger?
Do not assume so. Check the manufacturer’s instructions and obtain evidence for that exact charger and pack, including temperature monitoring, charging termination and fault responses.
Does a protection board prove battery safety?
No. Ask how its protections work with the tool and charger, and request test results. Wiring, sensors or missing communication can undermine the intended protection.
What should I request from the Chinese factory?
Ask for the compatibility schedule, cell specification, protection design, complete model-specific reports and change controls. Match the production batch to the tested design.
