What to do with a redacted factory audit report

Treat a redacted audit as incomplete evidence. Ask for the missing site details, findings, supporting records and appendices, then agree confidential access where needed. Keep approval pending if decision-critical gaps remain. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate checks through its own staff in China.

Identify what was removed

Keep the document as received and ask whether it is an issuer-prepared summary, a redacted original or a supplier-written extract. Request the report reference, visit date, revision, issuer and original contents list. Ask for a deletion schedule showing which pages, fields and appendices were withheld, why and who authorised the changes.

Compare the visible scope with the decision you need to make. Our audit and inspection report comparison explains the different checks. This guide addresses missing evidence within an audit, rather than repeating what each check covers.

Resolve missing site identifiers

Ask for the audited company name, production address and the buildings, processes and subcontracted operations covered. Match these to the proposed manufacturing location for your order. A group name, logo or sales-office address cannot establish which production site was visited.

If the address is withheld, propose confidential disclosure to your nominated reviewer. Ask the issuer, through independently verified contact details and with the report owner's permission, to confirm the report reference and site match. Until that link is established, record the manufacturing site as unverified. Use the factory-audit checklist for the wider site assessment.

Recover findings, evidence and appendices

Request the complete findings register, including issue descriptions, severity definitions, scope exclusions and areas the auditor could not assess. For each relevant finding, ask for its supporting observations or records, the proposed corrective action and any verification of closure. A favourable overall rating cannot reveal findings removed from the copy.

Reconcile the contents list and references in the body against the appendices supplied. Missing photographs, measurement sheets, interview summaries or corrective-action records may contain qualifications omitted from the summary. Ask the reviewer to distinguish an issue not found, an area not assessed and evidence not disclosed. For claimed corrections, use our corrective-action closure guide.

Offer controlled confidential access

Ask what the confidentiality concern actually covers. Offer a confidentiality agreement, a restricted document room, supervised viewing or direct access for an independent reviewer agreed with the report owner. Worker identities and unrelated customer details can remain masked while relevant findings and evidence are reviewed. These are access proposals to negotiate.

Agree the reviewer, permitted use, copying restrictions and what decision record can be retained. The reviewer should identify the original report examined, confirm the site match and describe relevant findings, unresolved issues and remaining exclusions. An assurance that the full report was seen is insufficient if you cannot understand the basis and limits of the recommendation.

Record the limits before approving an order

Do not infer that withheld findings were minor, that missing appendices contained nothing adverse or that corrective actions were verified. The shortened document cannot establish these points. An audit also does not establish that your shipment passes inspection or that your product meets destination requirements, as explained in the report comparison linked above.

For labour conditions, Home Office guidance notes that many human rights breaches, including modern slavery, are not immediately apparent. A clean summary therefore cannot establish an absence of exploitation.

Write down what is confirmed, what remains unknown and what evidence would resolve each gap. Name the buyer responsible for approval and agree when the evidence is needed. If critical gaps remain, defer supplier approval or commission a targeted visit. Keep decisions about tooling, payment and shipment separate from receipt of the summary.

Frequently asked questions

Can I accept a factory audit summary?

You can use it for initial screening. Before approval, check whether it identifies the production site and discloses relevant findings, evidence and limits. Record unresolved gaps rather than treating the summary as a full report.

What if the factory hides the audit address?

Request confidential disclosure to your nominated reviewer and issuer confirmation that the audited site matches your proposed production site. Until confirmed, treat that site link as unverified.

Does a redacted audit mean the factory failed?

Redaction alone does not establish failure or success. Ask what was removed and why, then arrange access to the evidence needed for your decision.

What if the factory refuses the full audit report?

Offer restricted viewing or an agreed independent reviewer. If decision-critical evidence remains inaccessible, defer approval or arrange a targeted audit. Record the refusal and the unresolved questions.
