Can I rely on another customer's factory audit?
Yes, as supporting evidence, if you can review the complete report, confirm it with the auditor with permission, and match its brief to your manufacturing requirements. Treat missing or unverified coverage as a gap before approving the factory. Cambridge China Bridge can review the report and arrange checks through its own staff in China.

Get the complete report before judging the result
Ask for the issued report, its appendices, photographs, findings and corrective-action follow-up, together with the commissioning customer's brief and assessment criteria. A pass badge, cover page or sales summary leaves you unable to see what was excluded, what failed or how the result was reached.
If confidential material has been removed, ask the customer and auditor to identify the omissions and whether they affect your assessment. Do not request another customer's private drawings unnecessarily. If you cannot review the relevant evidence, record that limitation and arrange your own check. Our report comparison explains what an audit can establish.
Obtain permission to confirm the report
Ask the commissioning customer to authorise the auditor to discuss the report with your named business. Ask the auditor what authorisation it needs before disclosure. Separately, ask whether its engagement terms allow your business to use the report for a supplier approval decision. Permission to receive a copy should not be treated as confirmation that the auditor accepts responsibility to you.
Contact the audit firm through independently found contact details. Ask it to confirm the report reference, issue date, site address, scope, version and follow-up status. Ask whether the copy is complete and whether conclusions have been amended. An authentic report can still be unsuitable for your order; a refusal to discuss it leaves verification unresolved rather than proving fraud.
Compare the original brief with your actual order
Prepare your current specification using the product specification guide. Compare each important requirement with what the auditor was asked to examine and what it actually observed. Classify coverage as supported, partly supported, untested or unclear. A customer buying standard stock may have commissioned a very different audit from a buyer ordering a bespoke component.
An audit of working conditions should not be used to infer dimensional capability or production capacity. Cabinet Office guidance on modern slavery describes audits as a way to verify suppliers' own judgements. For manufacturing capability, ask for evidence tied to your materials, processes and acceptance criteria; our factory audit checklist covers the wider visit.
| Your requirement | Evidence to look for | Gap to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Specified material and finish | Relevant material controls and finishing process observations | Different material, finish or unassessed subcontractor |
| Critical dimensions | Relevant equipment, measurement methods and records | General quality procedures without evidence for your tolerances |
| Your order volume and delivery pattern | Relevant line capacity and workload observations | Different line, changed workload or unsupported capacity claim |
| Batch traceability | Records connecting finished goods to inputs | Traceability described but not demonstrated |
Check what has changed since the visit
Confirm that your goods will be made at the audited address, using the relevant line and processes. Ask about changes in equipment, materials, subcontractors, quality staff and workload since the visit. Do not set a universal expiry period for borrowed audits: decide whether the evidence remains useful for the risk and changes involved.
Read the original findings alongside closure evidence. A factory's statement that a problem is fixed is weaker than records and an auditor's follow-up showing what was checked. Identify unresolved findings that could affect your product and ask for a focused follow-up. See when to audit an established factory again for the broader reassessment decision.

Record a bounded approval decision
Keep a decision record stating which report you reviewed, who confirmed it, what you were authorised to use, which requirements it supports and which gaps remain. Name the buyer responsible for approval. Where coverage is useful but incomplete, commission a focused supplementary visit; where identity, authenticity or critical capability remains unclear, arrange an audit against your own brief before committing.
Retain separate sample approval and order inspection checks. Borrowed audit evidence does not release your shipment. Send Cambridge China Bridge the report, available permissions, original brief and your specification; our own staff in China can check the manufacturing gaps you identify.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a factory audit paid for by another buyer?
Yes, as supporting evidence after checking the complete report, permitted use, authenticity and fit with your order. Record gaps and arrange supplementary checks before supplier approval.
Is a factory audit pass certificate enough?
A pass summary is insufficient for assessing scope and exclusions. Ask for the issued report, appendices, original brief, findings and closure evidence relevant to your manufacturing requirements.
Can I contact the auditor to verify the report?
Ask the commissioning customer to authorise discussion with your business, then confirm the auditor's disclosure conditions. Use independently found contact details and request written confirmation.
How recent does a factory audit need to be?
Judge relevance by changes since the visit, the audited processes and your order risks. If important evidence is outdated or missing, request a focused follow-up or an audit against your own brief.
