Factory audit vs first article and shipment inspection: what each report proves
A factory audit assesses the supplier's capability; first-article inspection checks an initial item against the drawing; production and pre-shipment checks assess the order; loading checks record what enters the container. Each answers a different question.

Five checks, five different decisions
A buyer can receive five reports on one order and still have an unresolved risk if each report answers the wrong question. Agree the check, the acceptance criteria and the person who decides release before work starts. The report contents below are a buyer brief to agree with the inspector, not a claim that every provider uses one standard form. A report records observed evidence within its stated scope; it is not a blanket product certificate.

Make the report usable before anyone visits the factory
Give the issuer the purchase order, named factory and site, SKU, current drawing revision, approved sample, material and packaging requirements, and the defects that would stop release. Ask the report to identify its date, stage, scope, sampling method, measurements or observations, photos, nonconformities, corrective actions and named signatory. Keep a separate buyer approval record: an inspector's pass finding does not itself authorise payment or shipment.
Sampling is a lot-decision method, not a promise that every piece was checked. If you use AQL or another acceptance plan, agree sample size, defect classes and limits in the order before inspection. ISO 28590 introduces attribute sampling systems; it does not set acceptance limits for your product.
First articles, certification and laboratory evidence are separate
For drawing-led metal or moulded components, first-article results should tie dimensions and characteristics to the approved revision, with any deviation accepted or rejected by the buyer. SAE AS9102C formalises first-article inspection for aerospace; it is not a general legal requirement for consumer products. Use the format your contract and sector actually require.
An ISO 9001 management-system certificate concerns a supplier's quality system, not the conformity of this batch. Product testing and regulatory evidence are separate tasks: the manufacturer normally arranges the relevant laboratory work, while the buyer confirms what evidence and importer obligations apply to the destination market. Ask who tested which product configuration and whether any independent verification is needed.
Choose a proportionate plan for trial orders and repeat containers
A small trial may need a verified supplier, approved sample and pre-shipment check. A new drawing, changed process, new supplier or high-risk product can justify a factory audit, first article and a production-stage check. For repeat full-container orders, decide whether batch inspection, traceability and a separate loading check are needed; previous approval of a sample does not release later lots automatically.

Is a factory audit the same as pre-shipment inspection?
No. An audit assesses a named factory's capability and controls. Pre-shipment inspection checks a finished order against the agreed specification and sampling plan; neither replaces the other.
Does a first-article report release the whole batch?
No. It records whether an identified first item matches the approved drawing or specification. Production changes and later units need their own agreed controls and buyer release decision.
Who signs the report and is a factory audit included in the quote?
Our China team or an appointed Chinese or independent third-party body signs the report, with the actual issuer named. An audit agreed within a goods order is included in that quote; a standalone audit is charged separately.
Does a passed inspection replace laboratory testing?
No. Inspection observations, laboratory results, management-system certification and importer compliance evidence answer different questions. Agree the product-specific tests and destination-market duties separately.
