How to prove product claims before listing

Turn each performance claim into a written test brief, test representative production goods and limit the listing to what the results support. Keep the tested specification tied to supplied batches and review changes before reusing evidence. Coordinate factory checks through Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with the exact claim

UK consumer-facing sellers should support factual product claims with evidence, as the Competition and Markets Authority's guidance states. Before approving a listing, collect claims from its title, images, comparison charts, packaging and instructions. Include implied claims: a photograph of a bag in heavy rain can suggest more protection than wording about splash resistance.

Create a claim register linking each proposed statement to the model, intended use, test method, acceptance criteria, supporting report and approved wording. Replace vague promises such as 'long-lasting' with a defined property you can evaluate. Decide what evidence would justify the wording before asking the factory to demonstrate it.

Commission tests that answer the claim

Give the laboratory the proposed wording and intended customer use, rather than requesting a generic pass certificate. Ask it to explain suitable methods, sample selection, conditioning, equipment and reporting limits. Agree acceptance criteria before testing. These are examples of test briefs, not prescribed standards or complete safety assessments.

Match the test brief to the promised performance
Proposed claimWhat to specifyLimit to resolve
Keeps drinks hotStarting temperature, fill level, lid position, ambient conditions and temperature measurements over timeA sealed vessel result may not represent repeated opening
Resists rainWater exposure, seams, closures, orientation and checks for ingressFabric testing alone does not establish finished-product protection
Runs longerOperating mode, workload, battery condition and stopping pointAn idle demonstration does not establish working runtime
Supports a heavy loadAssembly, loading direction, support surface, duration and signs of failureA static test does not establish resistance to movement or repeated loading
Outperforms another productIdentified comparator, equivalent conditions and the same measurement methodA result against that comparator does not establish superiority over all alternatives

Separate useful evidence from broader promises

A report supports the property measured under its recorded conditions. Do not turn a successful demonstration into a lifetime promise, or extend a result to untested sizes, materials or operating modes without a reasoned assessment. Review individual results and failures as well as the summary. If findings are mixed, investigate before choosing favourable results for the listing.

Treat safety evidence and performance evidence as separate questions: ask which measured result supports each sales statement. Marketplace acceptance is also a separate checkpoint; do not use an accepted upload as your technical conclusion. Follow our report verification guide and report coverage guide for document checks.

Connect tested samples to supplied stock

Arrange sample selection from identifiable production stock and record who selected, sealed and dispatched the goods. Keep photographs, model and batch identifiers, component specifications and any firmware version with the results. Use our laboratory sample guide for the handling record. A factory-prepared demonstration sample leaves a gap unless you establish its relationship to production.

Put the tested construction and agreed performance checks into the purchase specification. Ask the factory to flag changes to materials, components, tooling, assembly or firmware before supply. Assess whether changes affect existing evidence and arrange relevant retesting where needed. Our material substitution guide explains the approval process.

Release the listing with the batch

Before listing, compare approved wording with the reports, packaging, instructions and actual variant being supplied. Put relevant operating conditions beside the claim so buyers can understand its scope. If evidence supports only a narrower statement, narrow the wording or hold the listing pending further work. Save the approved listing version alongside the batch evidence.

Agree production checks for properties that can drift, and use targeted laboratory work where inspection cannot resolve the claim. Keep a retained sample and investigate customer complaints against batch records. Pause affected claims when stock or results no longer match. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can coordinate factory sample collection and checks against the agreed specification.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the factory's test report for my listing?

Only use it after checking authenticity, the tested model, method and conditions. Identify the result supporting your exact wording and establish how the tested sample relates to your supplied stock.

Do I need laboratory tests for every product claim?

Choose evidence to suit the claim. Recorded measurements may resolve a simple dimension claim; specialist testing may be needed for durability, water resistance or runtime. Ask what the method can establish.

Can I claim the best result from a product test?

Review the spread of results and the conditions behind the best result. Avoid presenting exceptional performance as normal use. Investigate failures and narrow the wording where the evidence is limited.

When should I retest China-made products?

Review evidence when construction, materials, components, firmware, production or intended use changes. Retest affected properties where the previous results no longer represent the supplied goods.
