Must I accept marketplace credit instead of a refund?
You need not accept marketplace credit where an applicable UK refund rule requires repayment by the original payment method, unless you expressly agree otherwise. Check your refund entitlement, seller identity and any credit selection before escalating unusable credit. Share the order and dispute records with Cambridge China Bridge.

Check the purchase purpose and seller
This guide concerns personal purchases, including those made by someone who also runs a business. The Consumer Rights Act defines a consumer as an individual acting wholly or mainly outside their trade, business, craft or profession. Keep purchases for your home separate from orders for business stock.
Save the seller’s legal name, address, listing, order confirmation and payment receipt. Ask whether the marketplace sold the goods or handled another seller’s transaction. For an overseas seller, ask a consumer adviser to check which UK refund rules apply to your contract before relying on them. Do not infer the answer from the website address or delivery location.
Distinguish a refund right from a credit offer
Where the UK consumer cancellation rules apply and you validly cancel, reimbursement must use the original payment method unless you expressly agreed otherwise. Where you exercise an applicable right to reject goods under the Consumer Rights Act after paying money, the refund must also use the original payment method unless you expressly agree otherwise. These rules concern refunds you are entitled to, rather than every request for a return.
Ask the seller to identify whether its offer is a cancellation refund, a refund following rejection, or a voluntary goodwill offer. If returning the item is proposed, check the address, authorisation and evidence needed before dispatch. Use returning a personal purchase to China for that separate task. For opened or used items, see our guide to cancellation refund deductions.
Check consent before accepting credit
Before selecting credit, save the refund screen and read the accompanying conditions. Ask whether the balance can be withdrawn, expires, requires further spending, excludes certain goods or is restricted to another account or country. Compare those restrictions with what you would actually buy.
If you did not choose credit, write: “I requested repayment to my original payment method and did not agree to marketplace credit. Please show the record of any consent you rely on and arrange the requested refund.” If you did select it, describe the exact screen and any restrictions that were missing or unclear. Ask for reversal without assuming that unusable credit automatically cancels your earlier agreement.
Challenge unusable credit through the platform
Use the order’s dispute or appeal channel and check its current submission deadline. Attach the refund offer, consent screen, credit conditions and screenshots showing the failed attempt to use the balance. State the remedy you want: reversal of the credit and repayment to the original payment method. Ask for a written decision explaining any refusal.
Keep messages within the platform’s recorded channels where possible. Check what a settlement or closure button says before selecting it, and avoid confirming receipt of money you have not received. See a seller asking you to close a dispute before refunding. For business settlement records, use reconciling supplier credit notes and refunds.

Escalate with the complete evidence pack
Ask your card issuer or payment provider whether a payment dispute route is available and what evidence and deadlines apply. Disclose the marketplace credit, whether you consented and whether you used any of it. Ask how to handle that balance while the complaint is reviewed. Use marketplace payments and card disputes to prepare the payment trail.
For consumer advice in England and Wales, contact Citizens Advice. If your complaint concerns how a financial firm handled the matter, follow that firm’s complaints procedure; you can usually then approach the Financial Ombudsman Service if unhappy with its response. That is a complaint about the financial firm’s handling, so keep it separate from your request to the seller or platform.
Frequently asked questions
Can a marketplace force me to take store credit?
Where the applicable UK cancellation or rejection refund rule requires the original payment method, credit needs your express agreement. First establish that you are entitled to that refund.
I clicked credit by mistake. Can I get money instead?
Save the selection screen and ask for reversal immediately. Explain what you selected and any unclear restrictions. Do not assume an accidental click guarantees reversal; ask for the consent record.
What if my refund credit cannot be used?
Capture the error, balance and restrictions. Appeal through the order’s dispute channel, explain why the credit fails and request repayment to the original payment method.
Should I close the dispute when credit appears?
Check the closure wording first. Keep the case open while requesting the remedy you want, and do not confirm receipt of a money refund merely because a credit balance appears.
